Canadian e-commerce company Shopify (NYSE: SHOP ) has found itself in an interesting position as the coronavirus pandemic unfolds. Shopify stock is no different. Lockdowns and social distancing are in full force, closing non-essential stores in many areas. Consumers are reluctant to venture out to shop, worried about exposure to COVID-19.

All this has resulted in an explosion of business for Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN ). Shopify — which has been positioning itself as an alternative to Amazon’s Marketplace sellers — isn’t seeing the same gains. After a brief bounce in March, Shopify stock is heading down again.

Shopify (SHOP) closed at $418 in the latest trading session, marking a +0.84% move from the prior day. This change lagged the S&P 500's 1.45% gain on the day. At the same time, the Dow added 1.22%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 0.78%.
Heading into today, shares of the cloud-based commerce company had lost 1.85% over the past month, outpacing the Computer and Technology sector's loss of 5.61% and the S&P 500's loss of 7.42% in that time.

Social chatter supports the idea that both Shopify and the companies on its platform are maintaining some semblance of business despite the national shutdown. Facebook ( $NASDAQ:FB ) Talking About Count has risen for Shopify since the crisis began, and following on both Facebook and Twitter has increased, at a bit higher pace than 2020 prior to the outbreak.

A recent blog post covering top brands using the platform covers a number of growing consumer and media companies. We won't get a better sense of Shopify's performance until its quarterly earnings for the first 90 days of 2020 are released, in early May. Analysts tracked by Zacks Investment Research are looking for EPS losses of -$0.69.

Laura Aubin always struggled in high school. And as she neared graduation, she feared the next four years would be more of the same.
“I wanted to focus on computer science, and I was also really interested in biology and art, but I kind of let the rest of it slip,” says the 22-year-old. “I had a hard time thinking what it would be like going to university.”
