LinkedIn cofounder and entrepreneur Reid Hoffman praised Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke's recent internal memo as an example of how leaders should approach AI use and integration at work. Lütke urged greater AI adoption within the workplace, stating that AI usage is ⁘now a fundamental expectation of everyone at Shopify.⁘

On the ⁘Possible⁘ podcast episode that aired on April 16, tech billionaire Hoffman commended Lütke for his viral note, titled ⁘AI usage is now a baseline expectation,⁘ referring to it as an ⁘open-source management technique.⁘

With AI capabilities now mandatory for all employees, shared by Lütke on X earlier this month, the memo offered further insights into Shopify's management approach. Lütke instructed teams to demonstrate why AI cannot be applied before seeking additional support, such as more staff or resources.

The memo encouraged employees to expand their AI knowledge and capabilities, even tying AI usage into the Shopify performance and peer review criteria. It established AI adoption as a factor that all employees are evaluated on when they are reviewed, even those in executive positions.

Many organizations have taken AI adoption seriously to take advantage of its potential as a tool to enhance productivity in the workplace.

In February, OpenAI cofounder Andrej Karpathy coined the term ⁘ vibe coding ,⁘ which means using AI to write code. OpenAI's chief product officer, Kevin Weil, also recently discussed how the company's chief people officer would ⁘vibe code⁘ to simplify coding tasks.

The recent conversations surrounding vibe coding has contributed to the ongoing transformation of how people consider AI use in software development. Many theorize that AI's potential as a development tool could open up the field to non-technical staff, threaten the jobs of AI engineers, or impact the need for technical skills among startup founders .
