Yang: Bloomberg made 'really crucial mistake' not entering SC race | TheHill

"To me, Bloomberg made a really crucial mistake by not getting in on South Carolina because he was on the debate stage in South Carolina, he had many endorsements, including from mayors in South Carolina, and advertising really works in South Carolina," Yang said on CNN.

"If he had put his ad dollars to work in South Carolina, I believe he'd have double digits tonight and he'd be suppressing Biden's margin of victory," Yang said. "But the fact that he waited for Super Tuesday is going to give Joe a burst of momentum."

Here Are The Most Interesting Things I Found on Facebook Marketplace

O ver the holidays, more and more ads for items in the Facebook Marketplace started to pop up on my feed. I’ve never bought anything through Marketplace before, which has been around since 2016—when it comes to strangers on the internet, you never know what you’re going to get. But I was curious about who is selling what in the Islands, so I started poking around. You can get everything from furniture to child care to a home and other, uh, more confusing items.

Hot Tamales: Three vendors are selling homemade tamales, all based at Schofield (and they don’t know each other, by the way). One told me that this is her third year making and selling them for the holidays. “It’s what I’m accustomed to having this time of year and not many people know how to make them,” she said over Messenger.

Bloomberg is paying for sponsored memes. Any ROI? - Marketplace

Earlier this month, Democratic presidential hopeful Michael Bloomberg hired a team of meme creators to post viral social media content for his campaign. Given the polls at the moment, it doesn’t seem like it worked, but we’re definitely still talking about it.

Taylor Lorenz: Not really a ton. The Federal Trade Commission has tried to issue rules and guidelines around disclosure on sponsored content. It has not been effective. There’s really no way to police these massive platforms. The majority of content related to politics is not sponsored, it’s organic content. When you look at who’s generating the most online conversation, it’s undeniably Trump and Bernie Sanders.

Bond yields hit a record low - Marketplace

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note hit its lowest level ever Friday, a bit over 1.1%. That means the government can borrow $100, do whatever it wants with that money for a decade, and then at the end of it, pay back just a $101 and some change. That’s basically free money.

We pay attention to bond yields because they can tell us a lot about where the economy’s going and where investors’ heads are at.

Yield just means how much money you’re going to make on a bond. Very simply, if bond yields are falling, it means investors are paying more money to purchase bonds with smaller payoffs.

Bag ban fallout? Shopping baskets disappear from Redmond Safeway - KTVZ

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ)  – A Redmond Safeway customer told NewsChannel 21 on Friday shopping baskets have been disappearing from the store since the plastic bag ban took effect.

At Oregon grocery stores, single-use plastic bags are no longer a checkout option due to the new state law. Shoppers must pay 5 cents for a paper bag or bring a reusable bag.

Larry Cole of Redmond told NewsChannel 21 that on Feb. 14, he was unable to find a shopping basket at Safeway to use while grocery shopping. He said the store staff told him customers had left the store with the baskets and did not return them.

9 Best Reusable Shopping Bags and Totes 2020 | The Strategist | New York Magazine

Starting on March 1, 2020, all single-use plastic bags will be banned in New York. That means no more plastic bags at the grocery store (though you still can get takeout delivered in a plastic bag). There are only two options: Pay five cents for a paper bag, or bring your own bag with you when you go to market. And since that five-cent fee is collected per bag, you're probably going to want to bring your own, especially for any big, multi-bag shopping trips.

Another obvious choice for a shopping bag is the L.L. Bean Boat and Tote, which we've written about at least six different times. This sturdy canvas tote was originally designed for hauling ice, but Strategist writer Hilary Reid uses her set for carrying laundry, water bottles, books, and any other knickknacks she needs to transport (including a desk lamp). Chris Black calls the Boat and Tote " the answer " to the question of whether or not adults should wear backpacks. (Answer: "No.

Delivery from Local Store Is Greenest Shopping Method--Most of the Time - Scientific American

For people who want to reduce their carbon footprints, shopping can present a dilemma. Is it greener to visit a physical store, to have that store deliver an order or to place one with an online-only retailer? The answer depends on several factors. In a new attempt to compare the greenhouse gas emissions associated with each shopping method, researchers have quantified how often one option ends up being better for the environment than another.

“We used a probabilistic approach—actually, that was one of the novelties of our work,” says study co-author Sadegh Shahmohammadi, an environmental scientist at Radboud University in the Netherlands. “Previous studies showed contradicting results [as to] whether online is better or offline is better. We wanted to improve the reliability of those models and see what is exactly going on.”

These leaders see that, while generating long-term value for shareholders matters, of course, it is more like the flickering shadow on the cave wall. In actuality, when business leaders free themselves up to view things differently, they find a more robust reality that needs their leadership.

At the east end of the block sits a six-story brick edifice, freshly painted white, that was bought by the real estate firm Icon Realty in 2014. The following year, the businesses that had occupied the building's seven adjoining storefronts for years—an antiques store, a vintage clothing store, a coffee shop—were either not offered lease renewals or presented with massive rent hikes , as the new owners prepared to renovate and revitalize the 127-year-old building.

Is taxing empty SF storefronts the solution for the blight on streets? - San Francisco Chronicle

An effort to fill San Francisco’s empty storefronts by taxing landlords is headed to the ballot box.

On Tuesday, voters will consider Proposition D, a tax on storefronts vacant for more than six months that supporters say will motivate landlords to find tenants. It would put San Francisco at the forefront of a nationwide retail-vacancy problem, making it the first major U.S. city to explicitly tax empty stores.

Supervisor Aaron Peskin, the sponsor of the measure, has argued that the tax is “about changing certain bad actor landlords’ behavior and creating a disincentive for long-term vacancies.” The tax will target long-term vacancies and potentially push property owners to lease stores at lower rents, he said.

Matthews, owner of Mackhard Barber Shoppe, already runs two locations in Downers Grove, Naperville, and Elmhurst. But a fourth spot in Clarendon Hills might not make the cut.

Paint cans, cabinet parts, and unfinished floors have been abandoned mid-renovation, after the village declared the storefront he was fixing up is zoned for retail use, not service. So Matthews can't operate a barbershop there.
