How This Bergen County Pizzeria Survived COVID-19 Pandemic, Opened Third Storefront | Fair

That's how Francesca Brick Oven Pizza & Pasta owner Sal Reina says his pizzeria was able to survive the COVID-19 pandemic, and then open a third Bergen County location.

With stores in Glen Rock and Elmwood Park, the new Fair Lawn location on Broadway was set to open in March -- just one week before COVID-19 swept the state. As neighboring businesses fell one-by-one, Reina couldn't help but wonder if it would happen to his, too.

* * *

School lunch programs and local functions made up a large portion of sales for both of Reina's stores. The Elmwood Park store, for example, landed an account providing 110 pies every Wednesday for local students,Reina said. When schools closed, that was gone.

Shopify's move into logistics is a gamble, Paul Harris says - Cantech Letter

Shopify ( Shopify Stock Quote, Chart, News TSX:SHOP ) is firing on all cylinders during COVID-19 and while the stars are aligning well for the Canadian e-commerce sensation, the rollout of its fulfillment network could be a near-term headwind, says portfolio manager Paul Harris.

"We don't own the stock — like everybody, you probably wish you did — but the reality is that we've sort of changed the way we have to think about many things, and Shopify is in this really sweet spot where they're really helping companies who didn't have an online presence to have one," said Harris, partner at Harris Douglas Asset Management, to BNN Bloomberg on Friday.

Can Shopify's (TSX:SHOP) Stock Price Move From $1,200 to $1,500 in July?

Stock prices of Shopify, Wix, and Zoom increased during this reality-distorting stock market rally. There is no doubt that the three companies have a bright future. But more than 100% growth in their stock price in just three months has raised red flags on their valuations. This inflated price comes after expectations that sales would grow 100-150% during the lockdown period.

But Shopify stock is already oversold, with a Relative Strength Index (RSI) of over 70. Moreover, the stock’s 100% rally is not backed by volumes, which means there are not many buyers or sellers in the market. There was a $50 gap between the closing price of March 23 and the opening price of March 24. A similar gap of $44 was witnessed on June 15, when Shopify announced its partnership with Walmart .

Four alcohol ecommerce insights from Drizly's 2020 Consumer Report and new data portal

Even as states reopen and allow for some form of on-premise consumption, those who became accustomed to imbibing more frequently at home are likely to keep at it. 70% of respondents said they are planning to continue to drink less away from home, and 30% are poised to do so more at home…for the remainder of the year, at least.

71% of current Drizly users and 50% of non-Drizly users anticipate at least 50% of their alcohol shopping will take place online, vs. in store, in the next year. For context, research conducted only last year found that 45% of consumers of legal drinking age were uncertain about the legality of buying alcohol online. The past four months have both steepened the education and trial curves, with new users growing up to 1700% above baseline on Drizly since March of 2020.

Black applicants more likely to be denied mortgages — study - Marketplace

Even before the coronavirus pandemic, online learning options were growing . But now, with around a billion and a half students worldwide displaced from schools, education institutions are scrambling to offer e-learning tools.

Much like it did for working from home, COVID-19 may be showing us what is possible in remote education. Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO of the online learning platform Coursera, said “online learning, with an ability to work remotely, I think, is a tremendous opportunity to provide, not only learning, but also job opportunities to a much broader class of people.” Coursera puts college and other lectures online for remote learning.

How Covid-19 will change our shopping habits - BBC Worklife

Henry Layte, owner of The Book Hive, one of the UK's most renowned independent bookstores, thought long and hard about how to open again after lockdown. He considered wrapping each book in plastic, placing them on tables under Perspex or allowing a maximum of two people in at a time. But none of it felt right.

"We're kind of open but you can't come in," says Layte. "When you get into the shop it's quite long and narrow, and there's just no way you can do it. The thing with browsing is you see a book, and you want to pick it up and read it. That's just not possible in the current situation. We've got to try something new."

Shopping for Fruit Bowls - The New York Times

In an otherwise unpredictable year, summer is beginning to deliver its annual bounty of fruits and vegetables. From fragrant peaches to sculptural squashes, their scents and colors fill the kitchen.

During that brief time before they're consumed, they can be the visual focus of the room — especially if they're displayed in a distinctive fruit bowl.

"Instead of a plant or flowers, the fruit acts as this welcoming element," said Barbara Sallick, a founder and the senior vice president of design at Waterworks and the author of "The Perfect Kitchen." "It's sort of like a piece of art."

Most Mainers factor COVID-19 concerns into shopping decisions, survey shows - Portland Press

Half of all shoppers have either left a business or would leave a business where physical distancing and mask-wearing rules were not followed, according to a survey conducted by a chamber of commerce in midcoast Maine.

The 20-question online survey administered by the Brunswick-based Southern Midcoast Maine Chamber from June 4-12 drew 2,939 responses from consumers across the state, said Cory King, the group’s executive director.

A key finding, he said, is that a quarter of the respondents said they have left a business where they had intended to make a purchase because they felt unsafe due to the public health practices of those around them. Another quarter said they would leave a business if they felt unsafe because others were not practicing social distancing or mask-wearing, King said.

Google Shopping Ads Are Free to Display in Main Search Results

Google is letting retailers run free shopping ads in US search results, which will be displayed in knowledge panels starting this summer.

This move comes only two months after Google made shopping ads free in the ‘Shopping’ tab. All together that’s a lot of free promotion available to retailers.

Following a dramatic increase in online shopping, Google says it has become “crucial” to connect consumers with the best merchants for their needs.

What Shopping in New York City Looks Like Now | The New Yorker

Shopping in New York City, at least in the Before Times, was all about the schlep. The schlep—heaving heavy shopping bags across the city, often between boroughs and on several forms of public transportation—was rarely a planned activity. I think of the time, a few summers back, when I saw the most beautiful, jumbo-sized aloe plant in the window of a gardening supply store in the flower district as I was on the way to meet a friend for a drink.

I did not expect to miss the schlep when nonessential retail stores first closed down, in mid-March, as the coronavirus took hold of the city. Anything I needed I could summon to my doorstep; anything I didn't need I was scared to let pass the threshold for fear of contamination. Self-quarantine felt, for a moment, like an opportunity to recalibrate my consumer habits. No more impulse-purchasing bodega flowers that would wilt inside my tote bag before I could get them home.
