Coronavirus forcing gloves off in Kennedy, Markey U.S. Senate battle

The spotlight was just swinging back onto the race between U.S. Sen. Edward Markey and U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy III when coronavirus hit.

Nearly three months and a statewide shutdown later, the incumbent senator and his congressman challenger will face off at 7 p.m. Monday in their first debate since February as they attempt to draw attention back to a marquee showdown now playing out against the backdrop of a pandemic.

Kennedy's early polling lead has largely evaporated now. The debate calendar has been truncated. The days of flesh-pressing and baby kissing are gone — and neither campaign thinks they'll be back before the Sept. 1 primary.

Chamber of Commerce warns against revoking Hong Kong status - Marketplace

Hong Kong falls in a unique diplomatic space: it's part of China but is promised freedom of speech, media and protest. Last week, the Chinese Communist Party made plans to directly crack down on dissent in Hong Kong, following a year of deadly protests there.

For nearly three decades, the U.S. has given Hong Kong special status — letting goods flow back and forth without tariffs and people to fly in and out with no visas. Other countries do the same. That makes Hong Kong a vital business hub, according to Fraser Howie, an independent financial analyst in Singapore.

Pandemic adds to shopping center owners' pain

The closing of the Papyrus chain in early 2020 took with it the firm's American Greetings store in Cleveland's Tower City Avenue Shops, as well as other Papyrus-named stores in Northeast Ohio. It's one of more than a dozen brands to close all or some of its stores since the year began.

Shopping center owners were challenged even before the pandemic and government lockdowns prompted massive temporary retailer closings.

Although stores are reopening as lockdown orders ease, the financial woes of retailers promise pain for retail property owners for months, if not years, to come.

Three Out Of Four Customers Are More Loyal To Your Employee Than Your Business

Customers who return to do business with a company typically spend more than the average one-time ... [+] customer.

If you've been following my work, you know I preach that there is a difference between repeat customers and loyal customers. While loyalty is the goal, I'll take a repeat customer—for the right reasons—any day. I say "for the right reasons" because not all repeat customers come back because they want to. It's just easier than finding somewhere else to do business. For example, it's not easy to move a bank account. It's a hassle to switch cable/internet companies.

Dealing with customer bankruptcies

“We had two large customers file for bankruptcy in May,” says Tony Murray, president, American Rentals, based in Long Beach, Calif. “I think the coronavirus (COVID-19) just pushed them over the edge. We also have seen a lot of our account customers using the coronavirus (COVID-19) as a reason they can’t make any payments.”

Murray believes these bankruptcies could be the first of many to come. That is why he is “tightening up our credit policies, our credit approval policies and following our credit limits. Normally, we are pretty lax, which works well in good times, but right now it is not working. We have to be a little bit more stringent on credit approvals. Sometimes we have to say no, which is hard to say to a business,” he says.

3 ways to stay connected with customers while social distancing - The Beacon

Social distancing guidelines forced many businesses to change the way they interact with their customers. Businesses deemed non-essential may not have been forced to shutter, but many were no longer allowed to welcome customers into their facilities.

Maintaining relationships with customers is a foundation for many small businesses. According to the global management consulting firm Bain & Company, the average repeat customer spends 67 percent more between months 31 and 36 with a business than they do between months zero and six. That highlights how vital it is for small businesses to maintain long-term relationships with repeat customers.
