The Antiques Market Bids Heavy On eCommerce | PYMNTS.com

If there's any industry that has been slow to transition online, it's antiques. It's the nature of the business that before someone spends a fair amount of discretionary income on a painting, jewelry box or grandfather clock, they typically want to see and touch it first. But a confluence of factors, including the shelter-in-place measure of the COVID-19 crisis , is changing that. Two recent moves from leading arts and antique dealers are leading a trend toward online arts and antique buying.

Boston has launched two new data platforms to keep residents up to date on the COVID-19 public health crisis in both the city and across Massachusetts.

Both were created in about a day using ArcGIS Online — a location and data service vendor — and publicly available data from state agencies, said Stefanie Costa Leabo, Boston's chief data officer, speaking with Government Technology .

"Given the rapidly evolving situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, we took it upon ourselves to leverage publicly available tools and data to begin establishing a consolidated view of what was happening in Boston, the commonwealth of Massachusetts and the United States as a whole," said Costa Leabo.

How Data Analytics Can Help Solve Supply Chain Pandemic Woes - eWEEK

eWEEK TREND ANALYSIS: The COVID-19 coronavirus has thrown the supply chains for some industries into disarray, but when you add the oil price war into the mix, the result is near chaos. A good analytics program can offer predictive help in situations like this.

What's happening is complex, and it's due in part to sudden changes in demand for some items and a sudden drop in demand for others. Adding to the complexity is a lack of some sources of material to provide supplies at the normal level; then there's a lack of transport for some types of materials.

How Artificial Intelligence is Going to Make Your Analytics Better Than Ever | 2020-03-31 |

According to a recent IHS Market Video Surveillance Installed Base Report, close to 85 million cameras will be installed in North America alone by 2021. It’s unrealistic to expect security personnel to monitor and manually search through this vast amount of video. Artificial intelligence (AI) presents a perfect solution to compensate for unmanned environments or those with limited staffing, or the loss of vigilance after looking at a screen too long.

AI can help us not only watch continuously, but also feed systems that are able to sort, organize and categorize massive amounts of data in a way that human operators cannot. And it can do so far more reliably than traditional video analytics ever did.

Much has been written about the impact that COVID-19 and the resulting social distancing/shelter in place measures are having on small businesses (and the steps that internet platforms like Facebook and Yelp — which, after all, make money from small businesses advertising — are taking to help).

Similarly, Zappacosta said the local services that Thumbtack showcases in its marketplace are also seeing anything from a “dramatic decline” to an “outright collapse.” Apparently the company’s business has fallen 61% in San Francisco, 55% in Detroit and 50% in New York City.

Best Tips For Staying Safe While Grocery Shopping

Grocery shopping is a necessity, but winding through aisles with a loaded cart and dodging other shoppers within a six-foot radius can feel like a dystopic version of Super Mario . It's easy to go through an entire bottle of hand sanitizer in one trip, re-upping every time you touch a canned good, the handle of the freezer case, or the credit-card machine.

But grocery shopping, for most, can also offer a welcome opportunity to leave the apartment. And — as we've learned by watching dozens of friends try their hand at baking bread — cooking is an excellent way to pass the time and quiet at least a fraction of our anxieties.

Retailers are trying to keep customers shopping, and consumer spending is important for the economy. But for some, buying discretionary items — anything that's not food and supplies — feels kind of weird and maybe even a little wrong.

Gulf Power Co. customers could get break on bills in May

Hundreds of thousands of Northwest Florida residents and businesses could get a break on their electric bills in May, after Gulf Power Co. announced a plan Monday to pass along savings from lower-than-expected natural gas costs.
