How Amazon's Competition Is Pushing Shopify Stock Higher (NYSE: SHOP) (NASDAQ: AMZN) - 24/7

Shopify Inc. ( NYSE: SHOP ) has come a long way since the company's initial public offering in 2015. The Shopify stock price hit $458 recently, up 191% in just the past year. Over the same period, the S&P 500 is up only 26%. That gives the company a market cap of $53 billion.

* * *

It announced that it crossed the 1 million customer barrier last October. Founder and CEO Tobi Lütke said, "With over one million businesses now built on Shopify, together we're rewriting the rules for our modern economy." While the news was impressive, the statement was overboard.

BCB Report Card: Shopify, SkyTrain and the most tired person in B.C. - BCBusiness

Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart is hell-bent on getting the Broadway SkyTrain to go all the way to UBC

As we say goodbye to the first month of 2020 (“Wow, that sure went fast,” says Steve, your co-worker), it’s clear that as much as some things change, others stay exactly the same.

For example, this week saw protesters outside David Eby’s office, the mayor of Vancouver griping about a SkyTrain to UBC and Surrey continuing to defy the rest of the province.

Shopify Inc.'s (NYSE:SHOP) Path To Profitability

Shopify Inc.'s ( NYSE:SHOP ) : Shopify Inc. provides a cloud-based multi-channel commerce platform for small and medium-sized businesses in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and internationally. The company's loss has recently broadened since it announced a -US$64.6m loss in the full financial year, compared to the latest trailing-twelve-month loss of -US$127.1m, moving it further away from breakeven.

According to the 30 industry analysts covering SHOP, the consensus is breakeven is near. They expect the company to post a final loss in 2021, before turning a profit of US$227m in 2022. So, SHOP is predicted to breakeven approximately 2 years from now. What rate will SHOP have to grow year-on-year in order to breakeven on this date? Using a line of best fit, I calculated an average annual growth rate of 45%, which is rather optimistic!

Eyeglass eCommerce And Retail Innovation | PYMNTS.com

Other eyeglass operations are following a roughly similar path, though sometimes wellness gives way to younger consumers’ demand that retail becomes much more sustainable. Take Sydney, Australia-headquartered Dresden Vision. Founded in 2015, it has gradually built up a large enough following that they've started to be called "the Warby Parker of Australia," unironically.

As for Felix Gray, wellness is an anchor of its brand proposition — but that focus is one reason it might not be working with Amazon’s marketplace services anytime soon. Amazon has lately seen the defection of the global shoe and apparel powerhouse Nike , in part because of Nike’s concerns about how its presence on Amazon could weaken its brand. That move, announced late last year, led to the latest round of debates about the value of listing on Amazon’s marketplace.

New U.S. Regulations on Counterfeit Goods Target Marketplaces | Practical Ecommerce

On January 24, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a report at the request of President Trump signaling the federal government's intention to crack down on ecommerce sales of counterfeit goods. In the report, entitled "Combating Trafficking in Counterfeit and Pirated Goods" ( PDF ), the federal government all but declares that ecommerce is a threat to national security.

"The rapid growth of e-commerce has revolutionized the way goods are bought and sold, allowing for counterfeit and pirated goods to flood our borders and penetrate our communities and homes. Illicit goods trafficked to American consumers by e-commerce platforms and online third-party marketplaces threaten public health and safety, as well as national security."

How bigger data is activating analytics | ITProPortal

It wasn’t so long ago that business analytics operated on a months-long cycle. For most of the twentieth century, the main interaction between a company and its data was a regular review of its most easily quantifiable measures, in the form of annual or quarterly financial assessments. Today, interacting with data this infrequently would be unimaginable in even a small business.

There are few industries which have not been lifted up by this rising tide of data. Access to and analysis of data is reorienting everything from customer service, to logistics and fulfilment, to product and software development – providing actionable insight well beyond the bottom-line of financial results.

The Secret to Data and Analytics Success Is…People

One of the most astonishing facts culled from the data and analytics field is the persistently high rate of failure. Despite the billions of dollars and millions of hours invested, the majority of data analytics projects simply do not succeed. There are many reasons for this, of course. Sometimes the technology is not up to par, and the data is almost always dirty. But arguably, the biggest factor is a lack of investment in people.

There's a growing realization that people are the key to data and analytics success. Of course, every organization that fancies itself to be "data-driven" would like to have more and better data scientists. It goes without saying they're investing in self-service tools so mere data analysts can hobnob with the data science elite. And let's not get started on the dearth of well-trained data engineers to build the pipelines that move the all-important resource.

Experts feel Giants are way behind the curve on analytics, trends

The New York Giants have won just 12 of their last 48 games and have become easy targets for so-called experts who love to kick teams when they are down.

But don’t blame these experts, blame the Giants. Blame general manager Dave Gettleman, who is bucking all of the modern methods teams have embraced when it comes to building their rosters, fortifying their organizations and getting an edge on the rest of the league.

The Giants, by admission, are and ‘old school’ outfit that seems to be run by whims and Gettleman’s inexplicable gambles. The NFL is a passing league and he is trying to turn the Giants into a running team and a team that stops the run. Unfortunately, he’s been largely unsuccessful in doing so.

Did Warren Get Her Ad Campaign Wrong in Iowa? - POLITICO

The Iowa caucuses might finally settle a long argument over what really works better for politicians: social media or TV?

* * *

This wasn't an oversight. It was a strategy. From mid-August until late October, when her rivals were flooding the airwaves, Warren would remain dark on TV for 12 weeks. Her first ad on broadcast TV ran on Oct. 26, long after she had risen to the top of the field.

Perhaps surprisingly, it was the millennial candidate who went retro. Warren's campaign leaned heavily on a modern, digital-first strategy early in the campaign, believing that the traditional, broad-brush medium of television wouldn't be effective until later in the contest.

Analysis Reveals Key Facebook Ad Strategies of Trump Campaign | Social Media Today

Earlier this month, an internal memo from Facebook's former mobile ads chief Andrew Bosworth was leaked to The New York Times , in which Bosworth discussed the platform's role in the 2016 US Presidential Election.

In the memo, Bosworth largely dismissed the various controversies around Cambridge Analytica, fake news, Russian interference, etc. Instead, Bosworth attributed Donald Trump's 2016 election victory to one thing:

" So was Facebook responsible for Donald Trump getting elected? I think the answer is yes, but not for the reasons anyone thinks.[...] He got elected because he ran the single best digital ad campaign I've ever seen from any advertiser. Period."

Ad campaign selling sadness, don't buy it   The Northside Sun

Back in 2005, a now defunct travel company, Sky Travel, paid a psychologist to determine what is the most depressing day of the year in order to use that date in a marketing campaign to encourage people to book more beach vacations. The psychologist, Dr. Cliff Arnall, found that there were several factors pointing towards the third or fourth Monday of January as being especially gloomy for many people and thus a great time to make summer plans.

Dr. Arnall has explained that he hoped Blue Monday would act as a challenge to people, encouraging them to fight off the 'blues' that can follow the holidays and make new plans for adventures or start new hobbies. He has admitted, though, that it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Turns out, if you tell people a day is going to be depressing and sad—it probably will be.

Watch Bloomberg and Trump's Very Different Super Bowl Ads - The New York Times

By contrast, Mr. Trump's ad features relatively general themes and imagery of the president's rallies, with a narrator boasting about low unemployment and the military. The ad could be mistaken as a generic Trump campaign ad; it is not particularly yoked to the football game, nor does it contain the sort of creative or conceptual touches that distinguish expensive Super Bowl ads.

Yet with the president's flair for dramatics and the suspense of a great reveal, the Trump campaign said that it would be airing two different 30-second ads during the game, and that the second ad "will be seen by the world for the first time when it actually airs."

FreeWheel Releases Video Marketplace Report | ExchangeWire.com

FreeWheel , a Comcast company and one of the industry's most complete advertising management solution, today launches its first Video Marketplace Report specifically for Europe, focusing on video advertising in Q3 2019. The paper shows a continued upward trend in premium video with ad views increasing 10% year-on-year. This rise is driving investment in "growth platforms" such as connected TV (CTV) and mobile.

The report also reveals interest in addressability is growing across all verticals with the share of audience-targeted ad views increasing 54% year-on-year. Agencies use data-driven, audience-based TV ads to deliver hard to reach audiences, reduce wasted impressions, and improve cost efficiencies, but targeted ads are also more engaging with completion rates 74% higher than non-targeted ads. Audience targeting is predicted to escalate in 2020, enabled by regulatory change.

LAS VEGAS —  There's certainly no shortage of shopping opportunities in Las Vegas, but there's not much the city seems to sell — from the kitschy souvenirs to the designer goods — that isn't available with a few finger swipes and an internet connection. Unless you know where to look, that is.

Then a Las Vegas shopping jaunt feels less like a slog through the dusty desert of consumable sameness and more like discovering an oasis of unique goods and retail environments with over-the-top (and oh-so-Instagrammable) art installations. Memorable merchandise and museum-like moments are as safe a bet as you're likely to find in Las Vegas.

NJ lawmakers renew debate over banning single-use shopping bags - News - Burlington County Times

Legislation to try to address so-called “plastics pollution” from shopping bags has been kicked around Trenton for years now without ever becoming law. The latest proposal to ban both non-reusable plastic and paper bags was believed to be close to gaining enough support but wound up as one of the casualties during last session’s lame-duck.

That was a question posed to New Jersey lawmakers Thursday as they once more began debating a proposal to impose a statewide ban on single-use plastic and paper bags and polystyrene containers.

New shopping center planned for Pike Road will feature Publix

The town announced Thursday that the popular grocer plans to build a location near town hall. It will be the anchor of a new shopping center development at the intersection of Vaughn and Pike roads, along a stretch of property behind CVS Pharmacy.

Mayor Gordon Stone called it the next milestone for the bedroom community east of Montgomery, which started its own school system five years ago. "We've worked very hard to grow our community and our town in a strategic way," Stone said.

“Surojit is a huge asset here because we’re a product-led company,” Armstrong says. “We have different leaders and they increasingly have responsibilities around P&L. Having one really experienced chief product officer that can mentor them and teach them to own revenues and budgets — really in the model of Google — that will professionalize Coinbase.”

“As a kid I would go with my mom to a local bank to withdraw money. And believe me when I tell you that the process was epic!” It included withdrawal slips, tokens and anxiously trying to match current signatures to versions decades old. When India demonetized and made everyone exchange their cash, “My dad, who was almost 80 at that time, stood in a queue for five hours to get 2000 Rs, which was the per-day limit for the first week. That's less than $30!
