Black Friday and Thanksgiving shopping 2020: What we know so far - CNET

A number of stores will be closed on Thanksgiving this year, often ending a long-standing tradition of kicking off Black Friday sales on Thursday, before the turkey has had a chance to cool. These retailers have not yet announced plans for Friday, Nov. 27, but we'll update this article as we learn more about their holiday hours.

In addition, all of the retailers listed below require customers to wear face coverings. Unless their policies change between now and Thankskgiving, it's reasonable to assume that face coverings will be required for Black Friday sales as well.

Tesla demand remained strong during pandemic with consumers shopping online: Musk - amNewYork

Tesla Inc <TSLA.O> Chief Executive Elon Musk in a podcast released on Friday said that demand for the company’s electric vehicles remained strong throughout the coronavirus pandemic, with consumers preferring to shop online instead of crowding into dealership shops.

Zero Waste Grocery Shopping? Tare Makes It Possible

LOS ANGELES – Walk into almost any grocery store, and the shelves aren't just loaded with food but plastic. Between the ketchup bottles and bread bags, the drink containers and frozen food trays, the average American generates about a half pound of plastic waste each day, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

"The problem is that a lot of companies are putting the waste on the people. They're not responsible for their packaging," said Joseph Macrino, co-owner of a new zero-waste grocery store in Highland Park called Tare. "We're really trying to close that loop."

Price Chopper discontinues use of plastic shopping bags at checkouts in N.Y.

Price Chopper/Market 32 supermarkets said Thursday the changeover would take effect Saturday in its New York stores.

New York state enacted a ban on single-use plastic bags five months ago. The ban contained exceptions for numerous types and uses of plastic bags, such as for retail sales of everything from cold cuts to kumquats, but not for the familiar two-handled thin-film plastic shopping bag that supermarket cashiers have loaded with purchased groceries for decades.

The Weird Quirks of Covid-Era Shopping

(Bloomberg Opinion) -- The pandemic has given rise to some big changes in consumer behavior. We're all familiar with the obvious ones by now, including more meals at home, fewer trips on airplanes and a dearth of reasons to buy high heels or suits. But after a batch of big-name consumer companies reported earnings in recent days, it's become clear those changes were just the beginning.

The Covid-19 situation has created a spider web of indirect, secondary shifts in shopping habits and consumer appetites that are just as consequential for brands and retailers as the bigger, broader trends. How companies respond will serve as a key test of their adaptability and creativity. Here are just a few examples:

COVID-19 has amplified customer expectations for safety and convenience, according to a new report from Forrester Research. That finding should come as no surprise, but businesses are doing a mixed job on delivering.

The report, The New, Unstable Normal: How COVID-19 Will Change Business And Technology Forever , said consumer risk avoidance and desire for convenience will coexist over the short term. More than half of US and Italian consumers Forrester surveyed said they plan to avoid crowds for the next 24 months, but 48% of Italians and 40% of US respondents expected to return to stores and resume normal shopping as soon as possible.

Just for Prime by Amazon could give a glimpse at Prime Day - 9to5Toys

Today, Amazon released a "Just for Prime" storefront that's exclusive to Prime members . You'll find deals across multiple categories here, with Amazon even offering 10% monthly credit for Prime members on select cell phone service plans. So far, we've yet to see Prime Day 2020 hit, but could this launch be a peek into what's to come over the next few months?

First off, let's chat about Prime Day. This shopping event, which started out as a single-day event, has morphed into a 48-hour extravaganza as of last year. Amazon discounted millions of items across its storefronts and offered deals that were, in some cases, deeper than Black Friday. Of course, this event is exclusive to Prime members in the same way the Just for Prime storefront is available only to those who join the club.

Ecommerce shipment volume surges while on-time deliveries plummet

U.S. ecommerce shipments in June 2020 were 30% higher compared with June 2019. However, growth is slowing, according to last-mile technology vendor Convey Inc. Convey's data is based on tens of millions of packages shipped from more than 500,000 locations in North America.

In April 2020—the first full month of closed stores in much of the U.S. because of the coronavirus pandemic—shipment volume for packages in Convey's network reached 19.0 million orders. This is nearly a 60% increase in package volume compared to April 2019. But since that peak, order volume has decreased month over month, with a 7.9% month-over-month decrease in May and a 15.4% decrease in June.

Global Ecommerce Sales Will Decelerate This Year While Some Markets Find Success - eMarketer

Ecommerce has been a bright spot among retail channels during the coronavirus, as consumers became reliant on digital transactions amid physical store closures and fear of infection. However, the impact on ecommerce retail spending has not been felt evenly across the world.

Ecommerce Opportunities Abound For Brands As Brick-And-Mortar Retailers Limit Holiday Hours

Being closed on Thanksgiving Day also aligns with the increased adoption of ecommerce by consumers of all kinds. Less brick-and-mortar shopping over the holidays suggests the need for all brands to amplify their digital presences leveraging creative multichannel strategies and mobile-first optimizations. The holidays will be different this year, but brands and retailers can still be a part of new traditions and behaviors.

The decision by retailers to close on Thanksgiving is reflective of the quieter holiday that consumers will be having overall, with less travel and fewer gatherings due to people still observing social distancing guidelines. Last year, shoppers spent $4.2 billion shopping online during Thanksgiving, so digital marketers should seize the opportunity to leverage their ecommerce capabilities, many of which have been refined over the last several months due to the pandemic.
