Voters in San Francisco recently approved a measure that has been floated before in New York — a tax on landlords that fail to fill their vacant storefronts before the clock runs out.
That tax, approved by 70 percent of voters, covers stores in some parts of the city that have been empty for at least 182 days and will go into effect next year. The annual revenue from the tax, which does not have an expiration date, is estimated to be around $5 million and will help support small businesses.

The storefront at 5305 E. Second St., where Paradis Ice Cream was located in Belmont Shore, will soon be a Cinnaholic. The shop will offer create-your-own cinnamon rolls, that are fresh-baked and 100% vegan, dairy and lactose-free, egg-free and cholesterol-free.
According to James McLean, the franchisee, the shop will open in late April or early May. In 2014, Shark Tank star Robert Herjavec, who internet sources claim to be worth in excess of $100 million, became one of the early investors in Cinnaholic, in a deal cut on national TV. (Owners Florian and Shannon Radke negotiated a $200,000 investment for 40% of the company.)

AVON — Debra (Underwood) Hendricks, Avon, is quite the busy woman. Not only is she the mother of Kandra, 14, and Kent, 9, but she's also been preparing to open her business, Sweets & Stones Boutique/Bakery, at 1790 23rd Ave. in Avon. Hendricks is leasing the dining room/kitchen of the former Avon Nursing Home from Will Zimmerman, owner of MGS. On top of preparing her new business, Hendricks works as the kitchen manager at Club 41 in Saint Augustine.
Sweets & Stones first started on Facebook, and the bricks-and-mortar store opens at noon Sunday, March 15.

Jonathan T. Pinckney, a 2018 management grad, began selling EGO electric lawn products directly to consumers through his Garden Pro Tools company immediately after graduating from college. Previously, the enterprising student launched J&J Groundworks while enrolled in his two- and four-year degree programs.

The 14th of March marks the 158th anniversary of the Battle of New Bern, when Union armies captured the city for the duration of the war. But before the town fell, John L. Pennington, editor of the Daily Progress wrote, New Bern was a bastion of optimism and Confederate patriotism. “Confederate flags are ‘all the go now.,’” he wrote. “You can scarcely look along the streets without seeing them streaming from business houses or private residences.”
