Stores, like shoppers, got ready to hunker down during the coronavirus pandemic. Several shops on Michigan Avenue and nearby retail high streets have boarded up or emptied store windows.
It's not just about preventing vandalism or theft. Retailers likely want to make sure merchandise isn't locked up in stores where customers can't shop, said Robert Moraca, vice president for loss prevention at the National Retail Federation.

DENVER (CBS4) – It’s becoming more and more of a common sight, business owners in Denver are boarding up their store fronts to protect their shops while they’re shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tattoo shop has been a fixture on South Broadway for about 14 years. Now, as Gov. Jared Polis has ordered non-essential personal service facilities to close until April 30, the shop it taking a big hit.
“At first when it was 14 days we thought that’s a long time and it’s going to be tough but we will make it,” Wells said. “But now, we kind of don’t know what we’re going to do. We have to find new jobs but nobody is really hiring right now.”

This week, designer Laura Hodges explains how opening a circa-1800s storefront in Catonsville, Maryland, changed her game.
How did you land your first client?
When I was still at NYSID , a woman put an ad on Craigslist saying that she was looking for somebody to do a design project for her. She had the idea that we could exchange lack of experience for the ability to work on projects [and build a portfolio], and she had this lovely condo on 36th Street in midtown Manhattan. She wanted to work with a designer, but didn't feel like she had the budget to hire somebody. I did it completely free of charge.
Lakewood introduces pandemic-related rent payment reimbursement program for small business owners
LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Economic development efforts in Lakewood during the coronavirus pandemic are focused on keeping small businesses open and commercial property occupied.
In addition to any federal and state programs being offered to owners, Lakewood recently introduced its Small Business Rent Relief fund, which provides up to a $3,000 grant for rent payment reimbursement to businesses adversely affected by the pandemic.
"This is something I'm really excited to get out there," said Mayor Meghan George, who noted that during the 1980s, her father was a small business owner in the city.
