Post-Coronavirus Retail: What Shopping Will Look Like As Stores Begin Reopening

The recent reopening of some stores, the pickup of merchandise outside leading stores and the effort to open units in Texas by this weekend all point to an effort by retailers to restore some sense of business as usual. I hear that Macy's plans to reopen stories in different areas; JC Penney will open stores in Nebraska, Oklahoma and Arkansas; and Neiman Marcus will also start having curbside pickups.

New online shopping habits and new customer demands are now set. CommerceHub, a distributed commerce network, published an excellent study about consumer confidence in the current supply chain landscape to serve their needs. They observed that many consumers moved shopping for essential items to on-line purchasing and will continue to do so in the post-COVID-19 period.

Amazon earnings: Jeff Bezos warns of loss despite high pandemic sales - Vox

The company plans to spend at least $4 billion on Covid-19-related expenses between April and June.

Amazon's revenue grew 26 percent in the first three months of the year, the company announced Thursday. The tech giant became an essential shopping destination in March after the Covid-19 pandemic incited stay-at-home orders across the globe.

"Under normal circumstances, in this coming Q2, we'd expect to make some $4 billion or more in operating profit," Bezos wrote in a statement. "But these aren't normal circumstances. Instead, we expect to spend the entirety of that $4 billion, and perhaps a bit more, on Covid-related expenses, getting products to customers, and keeping employees safe."

That's when the mall in Jefferson Parish closed its doors as part of the state's stay-at-home order aimed at slowing the spread of the Coronavirus.

As Louisiana slowly reopens the economy, about a dozen stores at Lakeside will join a host of restaurants at the mall offering curbside service beginning on Friday.

"We've been anxiously awaiting the right time to open," Chad Berg, Lee Michael's Fine Jewelry said. "We've been spending hours putting together procedures of what the new reality looks like. The social distancing, the mask, the visors, really allowing our people to understand what is the new normal going to be."

Area grocery stores implement changes for safe shopping | Local News | kenoshanews.com

Six weeks ago, grocery shopping was an outing, an expedition for families and singles to procure sustenance and supplies for and often with their clan in the coming week.

But in our efforts to halt the spread of coronavirus, we have ceased or severely limited our out-of-home excursions to only the very necessary.

Today, in addition to a shopping list, you may need a face mask for a trip to the store. Additionally, families are now asked to limit trips to one once a week and designate a single shopper to enter the store. Exceptions, however, are made for those needing to accompany a shopper classified as vulnerable.

Coronavirus: Here's how shopping malls could change when they reopen

When shoppers return to their local Simon mall or outlet, they'll likely find food courts with less seating, directional signs and dividers to control the flow of foot traffic, and free temperature testing via infrared thermometers.

The safety protocols are outlined in a comprehensive guide that Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group, the nation's largest owner and operator of shopping malls, published on its website after the document leaked to media outlets Tuesday.

Shopping centers working to reopen in Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Malls and shopping centers across the area are preparing to reopen as the new state health order Safer at Home goes into effect Thursday night at 5:00 p.m.

The Riverchase Galleria will remain closed for now. Mayor Frank Brocato says he's been in contact with mall leaders and they are working to determine the safest way to allow shoppers back inside.

Brocato said, "I'm going to be excited to see our mall open again. That's a focal point in our city, that's downtown Hoover so to speak. So I've talked to the general manager there. i think they're anticipating maybe the middle of the week actually cranking back up."
