Luxfor glass: prismatic tiles. Nobody makes them any more, and since the advent of electricity – which admittedly was some time ago – they really aren’t needed anymore. But several downtown buildings have them and, once upon a time, most did.
It’s those glass tile transoms you see in some of the buildings like Baxter’s, Baker’s Kitchen and Mitchell Hardware. Made up of multiple squares of thick, patterned glass held together within leaded frames, the glass runs parallel to the ground, above the storefront window.

When San Francisco businesses closed in mid-March to comply with the shelter-in-place order, storefronts boarded up their windows with massive sheets of plywood to prevent looting.
While many saw the stark change in the city as unsettling and depressing, SF residents Shannon Riley and Meredith Winner recognized an opportunity.
Riley and Winner, who founded the SF-based arts production agency Building 180 , saw an endless supply of empty canvases and got the idea to raise money for artists to transform boarded-up storefront with murals.
They brought the idea to the nonprofit Art for Civil Discourse , one thing led to another, and a project called Paint the Void was born.

As businesses throughout Buena Vista reopen following weeks of being closed to slow the spread of COVID-19, one business on Main Street will be opening for the first time.
Cause+Medic, the first retail storefront of a CBD skincare line distributed nationally, will open officially later this month on East Main Street, although the store opened its doors tentatively, like many businesses, last weekend.

Local storefront pick up in San Francisco will expand as early as May 18 to include bookstores, home goods, and sewing supplies, city officials announced in a press release.
"We have been hard at work to find ways to reopen more businesses and activities safely and responsibly," said Mayor Breed. "Giving businesses the option to reopen and provide storefront pickup will provide some relief for everyone in our city—allowing some people to get back to work, while still protecting public health."
