In an effort to enliven the local streetscapes around National Landing during the COVID-19 pandemic, The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) has launched #LoveNationalLanding, a new art campaign that highlights the work of area businesses and local artists.
"The BID is constantly exploring ways to foster a sense of community and show support for area businesses," Tracy Sayegh Gabriel , president and executive director of the BID, told Commercial Observer. "Our efforts include placemaking, public art, beautifying the public realm and community-building programming. Our #LoveNationalLanding campaign touches upon each of these objectives."

The annual program awards $50,000 per year, and this year there was a total of $101,505 requested, according to City Planner Cathy Laughlin.
Five businesses applied, and special conditions were brought up for two candidates at an April 28 special session held online because of the coronavirus outbreak.
"We are a nonprofit organization and we just purchased our building about eight months ago," Kamps said. "Unfortunately, buying this building as a nonprofit made us no longer eligible for the program, which is a huge bummer.

RedH Nutrition closed its storefront April 30th. But even though it's not face-to-face, owner Katie Danger said she is seeing more customers during the COVID-19 crisis.

She said the unknown of the pandemic made her rethink her business plan. Before the pandemic, Danger said 80% of her sales came from online orders, 20% from in-store sales. But she liked being in the actual store, helping customers with health and wellness goals and connecting in person.

ARLINGTON, VA — A new effort by the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) is brightening the local community by having local artists decorate storefront windows in the National Landing area of Arlington, according to a press release.
"We are thrilled to introduce our #LoveNationalLanding campaign and couldn't think of a better way to launch this initiative than the painted storefront campaign, which conveys our unwavering support for our small businesses and the vital role that public art plays in our community," said Crystal City BID President and Executive Director Tracy Sayegh Gabriel, in the release.

After nearly six years of selling its carefully curated collection of vinyl, cassettes, books, and zines, Dead Media announced Monday that its storefront on 35th Street is closing for good at the end of the month. The store thanked volunteers, the community, Paul Dickinson, John Kass, and all the performers that rolled through, before urging others to continue supporting their local record stores.
"We WILL still be open online and on Instagram till the time is right," the statement reads. The store will function as sort of an e-store, with records listed on Discogs for purchase, and can be messaged through Instagram. There are over 500 products available on Discogs from Dead Media, encompassing just about any genre your soul desires. Colin Wilkinson, one of the owners, said to keep an eye on their Instagram stories for updates too.
