The marketplace for personal protective equipment is harried by states — and even separate departments in the same county — all competing for the same supply, which is becoming increasingly expensive.
Mahoning County officials told Mahoning Matters this week it seems as if those willing to pay the most for shipments of essential masks, gloves and cleaning supplies are the first to receive them.
Though Mahoning has committed to buying thousands of masks at a time — and earmarked up to $200,000 for PPE thus far — county officials said they’ve seen quicker fulfillments for more able spenders, while their own “7- to 10-day” shipments get delayed for up to six weeks.

China may be the only economy in the world returning to "normal,” but it’s import picture still looks pretty bad — down 14% according to new numbers Thursday.
Typically, trade deals reduce tariffs and then let capitalism figure out who buys what and how much. But the U.S.-China deal has a target that China buy an average $12 billion in American goods each month.
Right now, the actual imports are less than half that, according to S&P's Global Market Intelligence. Chris Rogers, a contributor to S&P Global, said China hardly bought anything when the pandemic hit there.

Sitting on 109 acres in Learned, Mississippi, a Patch of Heaven farm is a smaller farming operation run by Mark Herring and his wife.
He says his phone started ringing off the hook when people saw his ad on the new Mississippi Farmer Marketplace portal which opened Thursday.
Herring says his operation is all natural. Grass-fed cattle, pigs and chickens raised organically. No chemicals are used.

An executive who joined Bonanza to run its online marketplace in January shared a post on Tuesday that highlighted some ways for sellers to sell items and pay no fees.
Greg Braukus was brutally honest about the fact he hadn’t realized Bonanza offered various ways to sell for free.
His epiphany came when he was looking through daily sales transactions scouring for trends, issues, and opportunities that could benefit sellers. “I saw a terrific order from one of our veteran sellers which totaled $300 for 14 unique items,” he wrote. “What astonished me, was that the Final Value Fee (commission fee) for the total order was 0, zip, zilch, nil, nada, zero!”

The coronavirus, resulting stay-at-home orders and record job losses are having an impact on some people's ability to pay rent. According to Apartment List , 31% of Americans made a partial rent payment or no payment at all in May. That's up from 25% in April, but the majority of those missed payments were eventually made up.
Figures from the National Multifamily Housing Council are slightly better. They show only 20% of renters have yet to make any payment for May. That’s down only 1.5 percentage points from this time last year, but the council says it’s reflective of the fact that it represents professionally managed buildings that tend to have more affluent tenants, and some landlords have worked out payment plans.
U.S. shed 20.5 million jobs in April, unemployment at 14.7% - Marketplace
The Labor Department's monthly employment report for April shows the jobless rate has soared to 14.7%, the highest level since the Great Depression. The U.S. lost 20.5 million jobs amid the coronavirus pandemic. Almost all the job growth achieved during the 11-year recovery from the Great Recession has now been lost in one month.
We also know that more than 33 million people have filed for jobless benefits since mid-March. And this April report does not include many of the most recent job losses. It also does not account for the entirety of unemployment resulting from the pandemic.
Some states reopen ACA enrollment during COVID-19 - Marketplace
At the end of 2019, Americans had a set period that ended in December to shop for a health care plan under the Affordable Care Act, often called Obamacare.
These plans are federally subsidized, making them cheaper for those who qualify to buy one. Some states have their own Obamacare marketplaces, though most rely on the federal one at healthcare.gov .
Now with the COVID-19 pandemic, an infection could mean massive medical bills for people who are uninsured.
Dubuque Mall to open PPE Marketplace to help local manufacturers get products to market
DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) - Kennedy Mall announced plans for a PPE Marketplace to help local personal protective equipment makers get their products to market more easily.
The mall says local PPE manufacturers may qualify for free rent space in the mall, so they can sell their products. The mall also says the PPE Marketplace will be a good opportunity for local manufacturers as well as Iowans in need products that will help them stay healthy.
The mall is specifically looking for products like facial coverings, hand sanitizer, gloves, shields and similar items.
