SF to begin to allow retailers to re-open with storefront pickup – The San Francisco

For the first time in nearly two months San Francisco will begin to allow non-essential retailers like bookstores, florists and music stores to reopen for business with storefront pickup only.

The reopening is expected to begin May 18 after The City issues guidelines next week, Mayor London Breed and Dr. Grant Colfax, head of the Department of Public Health, announced Thursday.

Non-essential San Francisco businesses have had to shut down since the March 17 shelter-in-place order was imposed to slow the spread of COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus. Only select businesses were allowed to remain in operation, such as grocery stores, coffee houses and restaurants for pickup or delivery only.

Spotlight News – JCPenney reportedly preparing for bankruptcy

J. C. Penney Company, Inc is preparing for bankruptcy with plans of closing 200 of its stores nationwide, according to a news story from Reuters last week.

The retail store has struggled over the years, competing against a paradigm shift in consumer behavior that has favored online shopping and big-box discount stores. Though the 118-year-old company reported more than $10 billion in net sales last year, it is also marred by billions of dollars in debt.

Businesses, artists partner to create murals on storefronts | KOIN.com

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Local artists teamed up with Portland businesses to bring some color to the city.

Businesses that had to board up their storefronts during the coronavirus pandemic offered up the plywood space as blank canvases for artists to paint murals on. It brightens the neighborhood while giving artists an opportunity to showcase their skills.

“Being able to utilize their skills and help give back to the community, build those relationships and also build their portfolio, while also helping small businesses create a moment to continue to represent their brand in the best light during these times,” said Kali Huebner of Kali Grey LLC.

Radiored, a One-of-a-Kind Puerto Rican Radio Station Shutters Storefront

It's the end of an era for Puerto Rico's Radiored. The genre-spanning, independent radio station announced the closure of its San Juan storefront yesterday.

"Now, in accordance with the times, we're going underground to keep playing #músicafresca," the caption of the Facebook post about the closure reads. The corresponding photo inside the former headquarters shows co-founder Payola Isabel standing, hand on hip, her expression a stoic blend of accomplishment and melancholy acceptance. Most noticeably, though, she looks strong.
