"I have a few, um, empty spaces," understates Jasper Mall manager Mike McClelland, during a scene in a new documentary film.
The doc's trailer is a poetic two-minute watch just by itself. Easy listening music echoes through empty mall corridors. Seniors get their morning walks in. Outside at daybreak, a post-apocalyptic barren parking lot. Inside under harsh incandescent lighting, McClelland handles maintenance and other mall matters in solitude, as if he's marooned alone on another world, like in that 2009 Sam Rockwell astronaut movie, "Moon."

San Diego Community News Group - Shopping in La Jolla merchants reopen for summer guests
Are you wondering if you can go shopping now in La Jolla? I decided to ask some of the local merchants about their experience with Covid-19 and if they have reopened.
My first interview was with Izzy Tihanyi, who is co-owner of Surf Diva with her sister Coco for the past 24 years. They have been 100% shut down for three months. She and her sister always wanted to have an online business and as a result of Covid-19 they actually created one for their customers. This was one of the positive results from the lockdown.
Davis rolls out new expanded outdoor shopping and dining options
As California continues to reopen, cities and counties are taking extra efforts to help businesses hit hard by COVID-19.
The city of Davis kicked off a special program to encourage socially-distanced shopping and dining in the downtown area this weekend, called Open Air Davis.
While the program will run seven days a week, part of G street will be closed to traffic Fridays through Sundays.
"This is a really difficult and challenging time for small businesses in general," said Brett Maresco, Executive Director of Davis Downtown Business Association. "There's no true patterns anymore. Especially with people feeling unsafe."

Observers of the American retail industry say multiple reasons go into the success of one large mall or shopping center and the wilting of others. The United States has far more retail stores per capita than many other countries, so the industry is competitive. A 2016 report by credit rating agency DBRS Morningstar said the U.S. had 23.5 square feet of retail space per person, compared with Nos. 2 and 3 — Canada with 16.4 square feet and Australia with 11.1 square feet.
Closure of many large stores such as Sears and Younkers, the rise of online shopping, the power of customer perception and the failure to modernize are factors in the decline of some malls and large shopping centers. Some retail chains took beatings when they were purchased by private equity firms or investment managers before the recession of 2008. Then those chains were saddled with too much debt, leading to closures and bankruptcies.
Market Basket, Shopping Malls Among Biggest Recipients of State's Free Mask Program | New
In early May, as New Hampshire officials began to lift restrictions on some corners of the economy, Gov. Chris Sununu announced that the state would distribute its stockpile of disposable masks to businesses and nonprofits for free.
Now, thanks to newly provided public records, we can see where those masks ended up — and which businesses were the biggest beneficiaries.

The masks distributed through this program came from a variey of sources, including a cache obtained in China by local inventor Dean Kamen . The state set up an application portal where local companies could place their orders, and the New Hampshire National Guard was enlisted to help with distribution, which took place over several weeks at Division of Motor Vehicles offices around the state.
