The National Association of Home Builders index hit a 35-year high this month — driven by low mortgage rates and strong demand for single-family homes in the suburbs and beyond. Meanwhile, U.S. home construction surged 22.6% in July, rebounding from a pandemic lull.
On the flip side, new construction for renters — which is to say, multi-family apartment buildings — is down in the pandemic.
Apartment market tracking firm RENTCafé predicts apartment construction will be down 12% from 2019 to the lowest level in five years.

Universal basic income, blockchain and more: Reimagining the next decade - Marketplace
David Brancaccio : You note that the birth rate in many parts of the developed world is down. Populations in Germany, certainly Japan and here in the U.S. are getting older. But one exception you’ve identified is Africa. And you see that as a great economic strength for a region that has long been damaged by the legacy of colonialism and bad governance?
Mauro Guillén : Absolutely. Between now and the year 2030, 400 billion babies will be born in Africa. And that can be a disaster, of course, if we don’t find ways of feeding them or educating them. But it’s also a huge opportunity because Africa will have by far the youngest population in the world. And economies tend to be more dynamic when the population is younger, on average.

The latest: President Donald Trump signed an executive action directing $400 extra a week in unemployment benefits. But will that aid actually reach people? It’s still unclear . Trump directed federal agencies to send $300 dollars in weekly aid, taken from the federal disaster relief fund, and called on states to provide an additional $100. But states’ budgets are stretched thin as it is.

How Sephora Sets The Standard For Bringing Clean, Safer Products To The Marketplace
Sephora's report shares progress that was made against three primary areas: increasing access to ingredient information, reducing the number of products that contain harmful chemicals and accelerating the adoption of safer alternatives.

Gathering ingredient information enables companies to identify which products contain high-priority chemicals – chemicals of concern that Sephora has identified for immediate action – and track progress made on reducing them. While Sephora was able to assess 95% of its products for the high-priority chemicals, expanding these efforts to addressing fragrance ingredient transparency would show true leadership, a move we hope to see embraced industry-wide.
