Packaging manufacturers see boosts in sales to ecommerce clients

As online merchants have gained sharp increases in sales during the pandemic, manufacturers that supply them with packaging materials and envelopes are also reaping benefits amid their own market pressures caused by the coronavirus.

Packaging supplies manufacturer Interstate Polymer Group Inc., based in Montreal and Sarasota, Florida, yesterday reported a 9.4% drop in revenue to $267.8 million for the second quarter ended June 30. It attributed the drop to a decline in overall order volume and lower prices, "primarily due to the next impact of COVID-19 on demand."

Most consumers abandon a slow-loading ecommerce site

When stores closed en-masse due to the coronavirus pandemic, more shoppers went online, testing the resiliency of retailers' and brands’ ecommerce sites.

90% of shoppers will abandon a site if it doesn't load in a reasonable time, according to a survey of 1,100 U.S.-based consumers conducted by Retail System Research (RSR) from April-May in a report released by ecommerce cloud platform Yottaa Inc.

5 hidden trends in North American ecommerce

What could be more 20 th century than retailing via printed catalogs and physical stores? And yet, one-fifth of the way through the 21 st century, many retailers that built their businesses around catalogs and bricks-and-mortar stores are doing very nicely online, thank you very much.

Those were two of the findings that took me a bit by surprise as I wrote the 2020 Digital Commerce 360 Top 1000 Report , which analyzes the performance of the 1,000 leading North American companies by online retail sales. And there were other noteworthy insights that emerged from the Top 1000 data. Here are five not-so-obvious trends that come out of this report.

Ecommerce Made Up 16.1% of US Total Retail Sales in Q2 - eMarketer Trends, Forecasts &

That's $211.51 billion in Q2 2020, up from $160.41 billion in Q1 2020. This strong ecommerce growth wasn't enough to offset losses from brick-and-mortar store closures, however, as total retail sales dropped 3.9% from the prior quarter.

Still, ecommerce picked up nearly 5 percentage points in the total retail market over just one quarter, according to the DOC, accounting for 16.1% of all retail sales in Q2. We estimate that ecommerce will make up 14.5% of US retail sales this year, up from 11.0% in 2019—the largest year-over-year increase since we began measuring the channel in 2008.
