Explosion at Virginia shopping center: Authorities seek clues

Investigators on Sunday hunted for clues behind a thunderous explosion that leveled a strip mall, injured five people and rattled residents for miles on a peaceful morning in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.

Nearby James Madison University said in a Facebook post that three students from the school's Army ROTC program who had been participating in a 10-mile race were among the injured. The explosion occurred about 30 yards from the start and finish line for the race, the school said.

Analyst: Holiday shopping will be 'very, very good' despite coronavirus, stimulus headwinds

However, the former CEO of Toys R Us and Hudson's Bay told Yahoo Finance that the current environment actually spells great news for the Thanksgiving to Christmas shopping sprint.

"I think holiday sales will be very strong. I've been saying that all along. People have been saving their money," Gerald Storch, CEO of Storch Advisors told "The Final Round" in an interview.

"Consumers have a lot of cash. When you look at the consumer balance sheet, it's very strong," he added. "So we know September sales were not just good, they were very, very good. October sales will be off the charts because a lot of retailers have brought sales forward into October."

Holly Trolley Shopping will now be a four-Saturday event | WANE 15

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – To prevent large crowds from gathering downtown this holiday season, the Downtown Improvement District has decided to make changes to the annual Holly Trolley Shopping.

According to DID’s events and programming manager Rick Zolman, the small business Saturday event changed from a one day event to taking place over four Saturday’s, activating it for a longer time frame. The idea is that this will help avoid packing a large crowd downtown for the shop small on just one Saturday.

Boulder County area shopping districts adapt with open-air sections, mixed uses, varied anchors

The traditional American mall has long been evolving, and regional centers have been catching on. Some shopping centers have already adapted by including necessary elements — open-air sections, economy-flexible anchor tenants, and mixed-use designs — while others have plans on the drawing table.

Redevelopments of shopping centers in and around Boulder have reimagined the mall that became a familiar part of Americana: an enclosed structure with hundreds of merchants and big chain department stores. A center that's almost entirely retail with maybe a food court and a movie theater, is changing fast in the region.
