California's Prop. 22 could affect the gig economy nationwide - Marketplace

California’s Proposition 22 is an initiative sponsored by Uber, Lyft, DoorDash and other gig work platforms. It would exempt app-based ride-hailing companies and food delivery companies from a new state law that requires them to classify drivers as employees instead of independent contractors.

Gig companies have poured nearly $200 million into the Yes on Proposition 22 campaign , making it the most expensive ballot initiative in state history. They’ve threatened to leave California or dramatically raise prices if it doesn’t pass, and a loss could embolden other states to insist that app companies hire their drivers.

Olympic chief says Games cannot be 'marketplace of demonstrations' - France 24

Olympic chief Thomas Bach warned against allowing the Games to "descend into a marketplace of demonstrations" on Saturday after criticism of a rule banning protests by athletes.

But Bach, who won a team fencing gold medal at the 1976 Olympics, said he had learned first-hand about the "political impotence of sport" when West Germany boycotted the 1980 Games over the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

"The athletes personify the values of excellence, solidarity and peace. They express this inclusiveness and mutual respect also by being politically neutral on the field of play and during the ceremonies," Bach wrote in British newspaper The Guardian.

Marketplace: Is Market On the Upswing Again? | 2020-10-22 | Modern Tire Dealer

This MTD exclusive was written by John Healy, a managing director and research analyst with Northcoast Research Holdings LLC, based in Cleveland, Ohio. Healy's Marketplace column appears each month in MTD.

Is demand for consumer tires on the upswing again? It appears so, based on feedback we’ve recently received from tire dealers.

Dealer commentary suggests that consumer demand was up versus levels seen during the month of August, when it took a slight dip. Tracking year-over-year, nearly 30% of respondents told us that they experienced a boost in demand. Our demand index climbed 11.4% in September versus the same month in 2019.

QR codes are finally having a moment in the pandemic - Marketplace

Quick Response, or QR codes were first invented back in 1994, as a way to track automotive vehicles during production, and to scan components quickly. Now, over a quarter century later, they are having a moment in the U.S., as consumers look to reduce contact in their everyday interactions to help minimize the spread of COVID-19. Maybe you've noticed them yourself. Many restaurants now have virtual menus that are accessed through QR codes.

Digital payment systems with QR code technology are already widely integrated in China. The country also has been using a color-coded QR code health pass in the pandemic, to control people’s movements and to slow the spread of COVID-19.
