Yankees slammed again for analytics, this time by Didi Gregorius - nj.com

The Yankees are being mocked again for making decisions based on analytics, this time by a former star who played for their last two managers.

Didi Gregorius brought the subject up Friday during a WFAN radio appearance when he was asked to compare Aaron Boone, his Yankees manager in 2018-19, to Joe Girardi, his Yankees manager from 2015-17 and again in 2020 with the Phillies .

I don’t know if it’s the coronavirus (COVID-19 strain) pandemic, the semi-isolation that goes with the ill wind, the diminishing salary caps in every sport or perhaps the role that analytics is playing with various coaches/managers, but strange things are happening in professional sports. 

The Atlanta Braves gave the National League crown to the L.A. Dodgers with boneheaded base-running mistakes that one would not find in the low amateur leagues. In Game 7, the Braves led 3-2 and had runners on second and third with nobody out. The Dodgers moved the infield defenders onto the baseline, which should have alerted Atlanta that a contact play was doomed from the outset.

Tibco To Acquire Business Analytics Pioneer Information Builders

Tibco Software, already a significant player in the business analytics and data management software arena, is acquiring Information Builders Inc., a pioneer and long-time player in the business analytics market, the companies announced Thursday.

The companies did not disclose the financial details of the acquisition deal. Tibco, which has made a series of acquisitions in recent years, said the IBI acquisition is the largest in its history. Both companies are privately held.

Tibco to buy Information Builders' tech for analytics, integration. But will it blend? | ZDNet

ZDNet spoke to the CEOs of both companies, who explained the synergies they see arising from the acquisition. In describing the two companies' courtship, IBI CEO Frank J. Vella thought compatibility was very high: "...you're not often in a luxurious position to pick your buyer; it has to be mutual," Vella said. He added "...there was a lot of interest. We were pleasantly surprised and flattered at the interest.

Tibco CEO Dan Streetman agreed with Vella's assessment on compatibility, saying "To Frank's point, the place where we have potentially the most overlap in a Venn diagram might be in visualizations and analytics, but we have this thesis that analytics are way more than BI and way more than visualizations. It's hyperconverged analytics, and that really extends all the way to the integration and the data preparation...so we see a lot of great synergies in culture, but also in products.

ABA Launches New Data and Analytics School | ABA Banking Journal

In 2021, ABA will launch a new Data and Analytics School . The first session will run virtually from Jan. 25 to Feb. 11. ABA partnered with the Emory Goizueta School of Business to develop the curriculum, and Emory’s faculty who also teach in the school.

The new program is designed to help bankers employ current techniques in data analytics to the challenges of attracting, engaging and retaining bank customers. Courses will cover modern analytics approaches, text analysis, developing a data strategy, mobile data insights and applications as well as bias and ethics in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Attendees are eligible for continuing education credits for the Certified Financial Marketing Professional credential.
