COVID-19 is putting the economy on fast-forward - Marketplace

It's a cliché for a reason. John F. Kennedy made it a staple of his campaign speeches. Al Gore used it in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech. The Chinese word for crisis consists of two symbols, one meaning danger , the other, we are told, meaning opportunity . What opportunities await us post corona?

The pandemic has a silver lining that could rival the size of the cloud. America overnight has a greater savings rate and fewer emissions. Three of the largest, and important, consumer categories in the U.S. (healthcare, education, and grocery) are in a state of unprecedented disruption and, possibly, progress.

It's a welcome development for Team Sports owner Tom Huna, who has rented space at the mall for six years.

Saying he's seen improvement plans for the mall come and go, Huna says this time he is cautiously optimistic that building owner Los Angeles-based Haggen Company will be able to make the plans a reality.

As the world gets closer and closer to a viable and fully effective COVID-19 vaccine, states are also working hard to get themselves ready for the huge responsibility of distributing the vaccine in an efficient and equitable fashion.

From €25m to €250m: Activating the smart city marketplace through collaboration - Cities Today -

By: Graham Colclough, UrbanDNA Founding Partner and Business Models & Financing Lead, Sharing Cities

When the Sharing Cities programme was proposed to the European Commission back in 2015, unlike so many other EU-funded projects, it sought to stimulate investment from its activities rather than just consume public funds. The proposal included an audacious goal to use the €25 million (US$29 million) programme funds to "trigger €500 million (US$594 million) of smart city investment".

Don't forget the garlic (industry) - Marketplace

With or without a pandemic, the days leading up to Thanksgiving are some of the busiest of the year at American grocery stores. Shoppers rush through checkout lines with carts loaded with potatoes, pumpkin, cranberries and — that essential ingredient on almost every holiday shopping list — garlic.

* * *

Ken Christopher: The American garlic industry is in a very unique state right now. We’re seeing a surge of demand nationwide for garlic unlike we’ve seen in company history. My family’s been farming garlic since 1956, so you can imagine we know what we’re talking about when it comes to garlic, and we’re seeing shipments approaching 50%, 60%, 70% over the same time last year.

Turkey company to miss Thanksgiving after fire wipes out inventory - Marketplace

Every November, UPS trucks line up as far as the eye can see in Tyler, Texas, to pick up tens of thousands of smoked thanksgiving turkeys from Greenberg Smoked Turkeys, a family business since 1938. These birds are so smoked they keep in transit.

But this Thanksgiving, there are no Greenberg turkeys. Greenberg's cold storage facility caught fire and blew up earlier this month after some kind of equipment malfunction. The turkey smoker was untouched, but it's too late to rescue the season.
