Business owners in the Central West End neighborhood of St. Louis have long adorned their storefronts with festive decorations during the holiday season.
Fifteen artists are creating storefront displays that interpret scenes from Charles Dickens' oft-adapted novel "A Christmas Carol." They will be in place from Nov. 28 through Dec. 23.
One idea behind it is to create an upbeat and safe activity for people who've been getting most of their entertainment via computer or TV screens during the coronavirus pandemic. Audiences can't gather in a theater for a stage adaptation of the story this December, but they can stroll down the streets of the Central West End.

The operators of a proposed cannabis business that initially had been rejected by the city of Martinez, and who later successfully appealed that rejection to the Martinez City Council, can now formally apply for a permit to establish a cannabis business they hope will one day evolve into manufacturing.
The City Council's approval last week is a key step in what has been a longer journey than anticipated for the owners of Opposite Coast LLC, who first submitted a proposal in June 2019 for a 10,000-square-foot cannabis manufacturing business at 4808 Sunrise Drive, in a light-industrial area on Martinez's east edge.

BURLINGTON — A civic group, a charity and an area bank are working together to give 152 meals to families in need Thanksgiving Day.
Community State Bank (CSB) and its employees recently donated 76 meals toward the Thanksgiving meal campaign by Love Inc. and Rotary Club of Burlington.
According to the bank, those meals were also matched by the Rotary Club of Burlington, making for a grand total of 152 meals to go out Thursday, Nov. 26.

Turow: Well, everything they’re hoping will drive sales. I think what it is, is an attempt to use the architecture that they have. The stores are brands [and] the physical architecture says something about a store. The idea that when you walk into a Ralph Lauren store, it’s not Macy’s. That’s the kind of idea they want to depict.

Cleanup is well underway at McMunn and Yates Building Supplies in Steinbach, and so are the plans for the future.
Now more than a week after a devastating fire tore through the building's storefront, Manager Corwin Penner says a team of engineers, insurance adjusters, and salvage experts are sifting through the rubble to determine what can be kept and what needs to be rebuilt.
"We're for sure going to be keeping the warehouse and everything to the back because that was really just affected by smoke. As well, there are a few outlying buildings that we have that were left completely untouched which is a testament to how hard the fire department worked. But, as far as I know, any of the retail portion is probably going to have to get replaced."

I wish they would have done it yesterday and certainly would like them to act now. There's so much pressure, particularly on small businesses, which are 70% of the tenants in shopping centers around the country. "
