Deserted storefronts take place of usual Thanksgiving Day crowds

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — It’s something of a post-Thanksgiving tradition. After the turkey, it’s usually off the stores, but that’s not happening this year.

Most major retailers have pushed back their Thanksgiving Day opening dates to Black Friday. In Southaven, parking lots that overflowed in years past sat empty Thursday afternoon.

Walmart, Best Buy and JC Penney have announced that their doors will open at 5 a.m. Friday. Target will open at 7 a.m.

Shop local: Pop-ups temporarily occupy vacant No Libs stores

The neighborhood is letting local businesses that don’t have a brick-and-mortar space to set up shop temporarily in a vacant store along North Second Street.

“We didn’t bring anybody in from out of town,” explained Northern Liberties Business Improvement District Executive Director Kristine Kennedy. “A lot of these businesses, they are already residents of the neighborhood who have already kind of started to organize a business and have been considering opening a storefront at some point.”

Small Business Saturday, COVID: Brockton-area businesses seek support

Moving to a new storefront and operating during the coronavirus pandemic has been a challenge for small business owner Evelyn St. Germain.

She is looking forward to Small Business Saturday, the weekend after Thanksgiving, which is one of the biggest selling days for her store, Bee Charmed Gift Shop and Country Store in East Bridgewater.

"People in this area have been absolutely fantastic. But when it comes to Small Business Saturday, it's overwhelming the support I've gotten," St. Germain said.

La Salle businesses can decorate their storefronts for Christmas contest | News Tribune

The La Salle Business Association also will organize Small Business Saturday(s) throughout La Salle, running from Friday, Nov 27, through Saturday, Dec 20.

Every purchase made offers shoppers a chance to win a $125 Locally La Salle Gift Card each week. Participating businesses will be offering special promos or giveaways during this time.

Businesses also will be decorating their storefronts, similar to the 2020 Halloween contest, and local students will vote on their favorites.
