3 Lasting Changes To Grocery Shopping After COVID-19

Grocery stores have long been a staple of the global economy. But it wasn't until the COVID-19 pandemic that most people realized just how vital they are. As lines of shoppers wrapped around stores and toilet paper were nearly possible to come by, grocery stores were forced into the spotlight. Stores quickly pivoted to provide shopping experiences that were safe and useful in hopes of getting shoppers the items they needed in the safest way possible.

Grocery's big moment has given the industry momentum. How stores leverage that momentum will be telling. These three lasting changes will forever impact how consumers get their food.

Many things are taking place:

Shopping for Firewood Holders - The New York Times

If you're lucky enough to have a wood-burning fireplace, you can look forward to one of winter's most enjoyable activities: spending cozy nights around the hearth.

But a roaring fire requires plenty of wood, and somewhere to put it. That makes one accessory — the log holder — especially useful at this time of year.

While a firewood holder is rarely the center of attention, "you want to make a choice that's visually attractive, but also functional and easy to access," said Corey Damen Jenkins , an interior designer in New York.

A camel was spotted at a Bath & Body Works in Nevada recently with its owner, video footage shows.

June Hilliard, a passerby who was shopping next to the Bath & Body Works, captured the strange sight on video.

The owner can be seen leading the animal by a leash into the store. The camel casually strolls in as staff and fellow shoppers appear to clear a path.

Others out on the street can be seen with their phones out capturing the unusual spectacle on video.

Rethinking local holiday shopping - Mid Hudson News

ROSENDALE – As Main Street shops opened on the next to last Saturday before Christmas, Bill Brooks, a barber on the thoroughfare, still had some time to think about his gift-giving strategy this year.

"My girlfriend, if I don't get her something," he said, with a little bit of a laugh, "You know what will happen."

Rosendale is a popular destination for festivals such as Frozendale, a winter event, and an international pickle festival Brooks started nearly a quarter century ago.

Third of digital shopping now on mobile devices — but there are disadvantages | WTOP

Shopping online via mobile devices now accounts for 33% of total digital spending, almost double what it was four years ago. And total mobile spending has grown 16% over the last year, compared to 5% year-over-year growth for desktop online spending.

But if you are not a regular mobile shopper because a small keyboard and screen doesn't sound appealing, you are partially correct.

"The biggest friction points revolve around not being able to see an item as well as on a desktop. There will always be advantages to making certain types of purchases on bigger screens," said Paul Dergarabedian of Reston, Virginia-based e-commerce tracking company Comscore , which tracked the recent rise in online mobile shopping.

Kibo Study: Younger Generations Show Increased Shift to Long-Term Online Shopping | Business Wire

The two generations surveyed also share a preference for shopping online over physical stores, with 28% of Gen Z and 24% of Millennials noting they will likely shop online more than before. Both groups cited convenience and price comparison as the top two benefits of online shopping. With such a major shift in shopping preference and behavior, retailers must update their operations to support more online activity.

"Younger adult generations were already online shopping fans before the Covid-19 pandemic, and this research shows that they've moved even further toward digital channels. The research shows that retailers need to unify the customer experience online and off more than ever before. Consumer demand for convenience requires modern commerce and order management capabilities," said Lisa Kalscheur, CMO at Kibo.
