HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — A formerly empty restaurant storefront has been transformed into a "free store," thanks to some thrifty neighbors who spotted a chance to help others while repurposing discarded goods.
Open 24/7, the store asks people to donate books, games, unused toiletries, small household items and nearly anything else useful — but not clothes, food, textiles, furniture or anything too bulky, given the small space.
Free stores are one of several neighborhood-based concepts, like community fridges and mutual aid groups , that have sprung up around New York as a way to help those struggling during the pandemic.

The board unanimously approved the special permit for Munro Associates LLC at 15-17 Mountain Street East, at the corner of Burncoat Street in the city's Summit neighborhood.
The establishment will be Munro's second local storefront; the company recently opened The Vault in Webster.
Joshua Lee Smith, a lawyer with the Bowditch & Dewey firm in Worcester representing Munro on the application, said the operation plans to have a total of 45 employees, with 10 to 13 employees on shift at any point in time. The business requires seven parking spaces, but the small strip mall where the marijuana retailer will be located has 28 overall spaces.
