Less than a month after graduating from Thomas College last May, Paige Costa opened her first retail storefront.
Costa, 21, is the co-founder and managing partner at North Star Apothecary, a small-batch, artisanal medical cannabis dispensary on U.S. Route 201 in Fairfield. The brightly lit 400-square-foot space is the first retail lens of her family’s North Star Farm.

Firefighters extinguished a smoky Saturday afternoon blaze before it could cause widespread damage to a Bergenfield commercial strip.
Five alarms were sounded, given the risk, after the accidental fire broke out around 1:45 p.m. on the roof of a South Washington Avenue building just south of Bedford Avenue where work was being done, responders said.
Of eight businesses in the building, only a juice bar and a vacant storefront couldn't be occupied.

Owner Kimberly Ogo said she started her business during the pandemic and struggled to promote her business and to bring in clients, but now many small businesses like Candelaria Artistry have a time to shine.
"They see it on my social media but they were a little hesitant to buy it but when they saw it in person it definitely help bring back the sales," said Ogo.
Tee Colvin postponed opening her business, Whipped by Tee, last year due to the pandemic. Now she said the farmers market allows her to get a fresh start.

The grant funds are split into two programs. The Small Business Storefront Equity program focuses on businesses that have been most impacted by closures required by the Stay at Home Order, those that have not been able to access other local, state, and federal resources, and those serving low-income, historically disinvested neighborhoods.
