Blessing of the Marketplace brings hope

After blessing people through car windows and laying hands on cars last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 200-plus in attendance at the 18th Blessing of the Marketplace on Wednesday at the new Destin High School agreed it was good to be back under one roof and in person.

"I think having it in-person today in a facility like this shows that the Destin community is getting back to normal," said Shane Moody, president and CEO of the Destin Chamber of Commerce. "Even though we were open for business this time last year, locals were still concerned about big gatherings. I know we were at the chamber.

Import duties skewing U.S. marketplace through Q1

WASHINGTON — The imposition in January of elevated import duties on consumer tires shipped from South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam has skewed the U.S. marketplace markedly since then, with imports from Taiwan and Thailand down measurably through the first three months of 2021.

Imports of passenger tires and light truck tires from Taiwan dropped 41.2% and 99.6%, respectively, in the period, according to Commerce Department data. Based on comment from companies that sell tires sourced from Taiwan, imports are likely to keep declining unless Commerce adjusts the duties downward.

'If you see something you like, you better be ready.

(WXYZ) — When the pandemic made some things hard to find and hopping from store to store wasn't really an option, Facebook Marketplace was open for business.

"I think people have turned to the community in many ways to try to help each other with information, in this case it's to try to help each other buying and selling," said Sonia Sroka, a Facebook spokesperson.

Sonia said people scooped up things like office chairs early on through Marketplace. Today, Facebook says more than 1 billion people visit Marketplace each month.

How to Capitalize on the E-Commerce Boom With a Multi-Marketplace Strategy

Marketplace sales are booming. According to Statista, 63 percent of consumers start their search on Amazon.com, 25 percent on other marketplaces, and only 21 percent on brands’ websites. Consumers trust and prefer marketplaces over brand websites for several reasons, including the availability of fast and free shipping, customer reviews, and easy product comparisons and returns.

A recent Shopify study found that merchants that sell in three or more channels can see a 200 percent boost in sales. Consequently, many online retailers see a multi-marketplace strategy as a path to sustainable growth. However, to be truly successful in this increasingly fragmented universe of evolving channels, sellers must carefully align their fulfillment and sales strategies.

That brings Heyday's total funding thus far to $245 million, impressive for a company that only launched in August and emerged from stealth in November.

The Heyday news is the latest indicator of the strong enthusiasm tech investors have for Amazon aggregators - companies that believe they can profit by taking successful, but small, Amazon sellers and making them a lot bigger.
