Cypress Creek Co Op Opens Its First Storefront | Osprey Observer

Six years ago, single mom of two Cassie Adams was working as a salesperson at a wholesale market. She would bring fresh produce home to her family by the bin, which would always leave her with too much. Adams reached out to a few families in her neighborhood and began to create a network of families that would buy the leftover produce. By the fourth week, she had 60 families involved, and Cypress Creek Co Op grew from there.

Since the small neighborhood group started on Facebook, it has grown to over 28,000 members and opened its first permanent storefront at the end of April. The storefront, which is located in Apollo Beach just off Hwy. 41, will give customers the opportunity to shop for the produce the co-op offers or purchase full bins any time.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Upper West Side City Councilmember Helen Rosenthal and Manhattan Borough President, and candidate for the UWS City Council seat, Gale Brewer have introduced new legislation in the NYC Council to help protect tenants of storefronts across the five boroughs.

The legislation is called the "Storefront Business Bill of Rights" and it would reform the commercial lease creation and renewal process.

The bill, which covers all commercial spaces that are accessible from the street, would entitle every storefront tenant with a lease longer than one month the right to renew their lease.

Norma Jean's parlays farmer's market success into storefront

Building on success from the Franklin Farmers Market, Norma Jean's Pastries now has a storefront in downtown Franklin.

Whitney Atkerson started Norma Jean's two years ago after spending four and a half years honing her baking skills at a Broad Ripple bakery. When she decided to venture out on her own, macarons were the obvious choice. They aren't available elsewhere in Johnson County, and the challenging French pastry is just fun to bake, she said.

Jersey Girl Bagels to open shop in Sarasota-Manatee

Plans are to open by fall, said Kim Fishman, a Lakewood Ranch resident who started making bagels out of her home about a year ago and has since developed a following.

As her business name suggests, Fishman was born and raised in New Jersey, spending time in New York City, too. She moved with her husband from Wayne, New Jersey, about five years ago and loves Florida, she said, missing two things about Jersey: the people and the food. When she couldn't find the specific type of bagels she was looking for, she started making her own.
