What Makes an Online Marketplace Disruptive?

On December 10, 2020, the rental housing marketplace Airbnb completed its initial public offering at a $47 billion valuation — one of the largest IPOs of the year. No less than 24 hours later, the company's market cap shot north of $100 billion. Both were incredible milestones for a platform that, by design, predominantly just facilitates transactions — it owns virtually none of the services it helps its suppliers provide.

The success of Airbnb is not without precedent. Over the past 20 years, industries have been redefined by marketplace giants like eBay, Amazon, Uber, and Udemy that have upended the way we shop, travel, eat, work, and learn. But at the same time, even the most successful marketplace businesses don't reach transformative scale. The question is: What are industry-changing marketplaces doing that others aren't — and can those practices be replicated?

An investigation into the Hydra marketplace has revealed surging transaction volumes and a thriving -- albeit illicit -- cryptocurrency ecosystem.

At its inception in 2015, Hydra was well-known for the sale of narcotics, but as time has gone on, the market has expanded to include stolen credit card data, counterfeit documents including IDs, fake banknotes, and cyberattack services, among other offerings.

Annual transaction volumes have climbed year-over-year, going from an estimated $9.4 million in 2016 to at least $1.37 billion in 2020.

The St. James Marketplace will celebrate its 20th year as a small-town vendor with a reopening this Memorial Day weekend, starting on Saturday and going through Monday.

After a year off because of COVID-19 regulations, the area vendors gathered a few weeks ago, to fill the marketplace shelves with all kinds of local craft ideas, ranging from embroidered dish clothes to crocheted potholders, woodworking works of art, Nebraska home decor and handmade baskets from the Amish women of Verdigre — and there's more. There's also a weekly bake sale in the old Catholic school west of Wynot in northern Cedar County just off Highway 12.

The Epic v. Apple case could hinge on the definition of the "marketplace" | Ars Technica

After three weeks of wide-ranging (and often meandering) witness testimony and questioning, today's closing arguments in the Epic Games Inc. v. Apple Inc. trial focused on two crucial and highly technical legal questions: what is the relevant competitive market and what should the court do if Apple is found to be unfairly monopolizing that market?

But Apple said that's the wrong way to look at the world iOS operates in and that the company already faces "massive competition on a worldwide scale." That includes mobile competition from Android (which has a much larger worldwide market share) and gaming competition from consoles, PC storefronts like Steam, and more.
