American consumers got holiday shopping off to a strong start | CNN Business

Americans dished out for toys, televisions and clothing on Black Friday and into the holiday weekend, despite decades-high inflation and a potential recession looming in 2023.

The National Retail Federation, a trade group for the retail industry, said a record 196 million Americans shopped in stores and online over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, a 10% increase from last year.

Wayfair Announces Strong Five-Day Peak Holiday Shopping Period

"As we continue to drive customer and supplier loyalty, this important five-day shopping period was a success, and we are excited to see order growth improving as prices get sharper," said Niraj Shah, CEO, co-founder and co-chairman, Wayfair.

W.Va. Retailers Association encourages smart shopping during holiday season

It is not a surprise for the West Virginia Retailers Association. The Association's President, Bridget Lamber, said businesses learned a lot about their customer base during the peak COVID-pandemic years.

"All retailers adjusted just like small mom-and-pop stores did, we had less in-store shopping and more online shopping," she said. "There was a shift during the pandemic, in how consumers got their goods."
