New Black business marketplace In The Black coming to Fillmore Street

The corner of Fillmore and Geary Streets was once the heart of the “Harlem of the West,” a stomping ground of John Coltrane and Billie Holiday at the height of the Fillmore’s “jazz district” heyday of the 1940s and 1950s.

But that check-cashing place has checked out, and a real urban renewal for the neighborhood is moving in. KPIX reports that a new marketplace called In The Black will be the home of 22 Black-owned retail small businesses, and the video segment below gives us a sneak preview of its progress.

The Marketplace on 67 to close its doors in late December - Statesboro Herald

Adams started her business with a rented space in Denmark in the early 1990s. She was employed full-time with the Bulloch County Board of Education at the time, and as she and her husband, Danny, built their new home, which had a farmhouse feel, she knew she wanted to fill it with antiques.

It went well, so she rented the place for a weekend, which soon turned into a whole month. She found she enjoyed what she was doing and after about seven years at the rented space, her husband told her that if she was going to keep going, they should build something of their own and not rent.
