New Ulm’s annual weekend Shopping Opener saw some of its largest opening day crowds, with visitors coming from all over the state to shop for holiday crafts.

The annual shopping opener coincides with the first weekend of deer hunting. While some hunt deer, others hunt for bargains.

Dear Heloise: I recently read about an elderly lady, who wished shopping carts were available near accessible parking spots. I wish more stores would invest in Caroline’s carts. These are shopping carts that allow an adult with a mobility issue to sit in a chair facing the operator.

Downtown Monroe shopping event Nov. 10

Shopping, store specials, giveaways, raffles and snacks are planned for Girlfriends' Night Out, to be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 10 in downtown Monroe.

The first 100 attendees will receive goodie bags filled with local discounts and items. Bags will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Distribution will begin at 5 p.m. at Williams Insurance Agency of Southeast Michigan, 14 W. Front St.

Thrifters have a new way to find secondhand bargains and deals: online. Goodwill Industries International is the latest to launch an e-commerce platform selling hundreds of thousands of thrifted items on GoodwillFinds.org.

GoodwillFinds.com launched in October as thrifting is having a moment. Sales in the secondhand and resale market are forecast to hit $5 4 billion in 2023. By 2026, they're expected to reach $82 billion, according to ThredUp, a resale website.
