Southern California Edison is warning customers about a scam that has been spreading recently involving a person posing as a company representative.
So far Palm Springs residents have been scammed of $4,708, according to SCE. The scam has also been reported in Cathedral City and Desert Hot Springs.
As part of the scam, the fraudulent SCE representative threatens customers over the phone with disconnection and removal of their electric meter unless they make an immediate payment, according to a news release.
"This is CRIMINAL FRAUD," SCE spokesperson Jeff Monford said in the release. "SCE never asks for payments over the phone or calls customers about an immediate service disconnection."
