San Diego police officers are getting a renovated storefront in Pacific Beach where in the future they can file reports and meet with residents, thanks to the Pacific Beach Town Council. The Olney Street storefront had dated appliances, decor and paint, which spoke to a deeper issue for the Northern Division⁘s police officers, according to PB Town Council President Charlie Nieto. He said the building became unsanitary, was long neglected and budget cuts in the department were showing.

To fix this, the council raised over $66,000 to fund the remodeling and fulfill the division⁘s other wish list needs. It also recruited DCF Construction Inc. to donate the labor needed for the remodeling.

More funds were raised through the Sept. 25 Police and Emergency Services Appreciation Night, commonly known as PAESAN.

Denise Friedman, a town council member and PAESAN co-organizer, saw the storefront⁘s disarray and said she knew the council⁘s team of volunteers had to do something about it.

⁘At our installation dinner (in January), when we announced that we would be featuring the Northern Division officers for our PAESAN event, we asked them for a wish list and number one on their list of four items was upgrading the facilities at the storefront,⁘ Friedman said.

Located at 4439 Olney St., police officers utilized that space to engage with the community and seek respite while on the clock. But, this space was not fulfilling its job.

⁘Despite its poor condition, it remained a critical rest stop for officers serving all coastal neighborhoods, with the nearest alternative being the Northern Division substation near the UTC mall,⁘ Nieto said.

The interior remodel targeted almost all rooms in the building, from the kitchen to the two restrooms and meeting spaces. The restrooms received all new sinks, mirrors and commodes, plus a paint job.

The main room was converted to be a working space. Gone are the old computers in order to make room for a community space.
