Universal's marketing push for "Wicked," which grossed more than $725 million worldwide, had few precedents in Hollywood history —and now the film is angling for Oscar votes.

Across Los Angeles, billboards promoting "Wicked" are labeled with the word "DEFY," a nod to the film's climactic high note, "Defying Gravity"—and another case study in the Oscar strategy of asking voters to remember the emotion of a movie. (Oscar voters nominate movies they admire, and vote for those they love, the adage goes.)

Stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are back on the circuit, too, talking to audiences about the research that went into their roles and the acting choices each of them made–subtly reminding voters that their performances constitute more than just powerhouse vocals.
