Millions will get their relief payment via debit card. That's good ... and bad - Marketplace

The Treasury Department has already started sending out the new round of pandemic relief payments. The IRS says it started making direct deposits into some people’s bank accounts Tuesday.

People who don't have a bank account on file with the agency can look forward to getting either a paper check or a prepaid debit card in the mail. The Treasury said it sent out around 4 million prepaid cards during the first round of relief. The cards have some advantages over paper checks — but some drawbacks, too.

Book sales are up, but is that helping independent sellers? - Marketplace

There's a phrase some in the publishing industry are tossing around right now when discussing how 2020 went for them: surprisingly good.

With concerts and movies mostly canceled since March, many more people have been looking for activities to do at home. It turns out that people are buying more books.

Print sales are up almost 8% over last year at this time, according to industry research from NPD BookScan .

But is that only good news for the online giants like Amazon, or are the independent sellers getting in on the action?

Survey helps older adults assess their vulnerability to scams - Marketplace

In a national study, Peter Lichtenberg, director of the Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University in Michigan, found that our physical and mental health as well as the health of our relationships are important predictors when it comes to our self-reported feelings of our own financial vulnerability.

"Financial health is one part of health along with physical, mental and functional health," said Lichtenberg.

A separate study by Lichtenberg found that a financial exploitation survey that assesses one's financial decision-making can help indicate how susceptible one might be to various financial scams. Lichtenberg's survey for older adults is available freely on his website, along with resources for protecting yourself and your loved ones from fraud.

Then he asked aides to project an ongoing survey of 13 world leaders' approval ratings.

Will Shopping Malls Make a Comeback in 2021? – Footwear News

When it comes to business, shopping malls — with their enclosed spaces and classification as nonessential retail — are among the retail categories that faced the most pressure.

According to market research firm Placer.ai, despite several years of waning foot traffic and uneven momentum, mall visits in 2020 were off to a solid start pre-coronavirus pandemic.

But as the global health crisis touched down in the United States in March, visits to malls across the country came to a near standstill amid government orders mandating the temporary closures of nonessential stores. And even as restrictions were loosened in the months that followed, widespread layoffs and furloughs coupled with fears of store safety kept many cash-strapped, anxious consumers at home.

Iowa sports betting: New 2021 rules open up apps to more customers

Iowa may have launched sports wagering earlier than any of its Midwest counterparts, but to most operators, the state has been taking its revenue potential at a jog, and not a sprint.

The idea was to give Iowa's 18 licensed casinos for sports betting an experiential shot in the arm and a new pool of customers. To outside providers, the requirement placed geographical limitations on their reach.

As such, although the market has been up and running for 16 months, the new year brings a sort of second launch to Iowa's 3.16 million in population. Or, in the opinion of some operators, something even greater.

NYC Restaurants Can Now Sell Food on Their Sidewalks Under Open Storefronts Program - Eater NY

In a minor win for restaurateurs this week, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that restaurants and bars can now use a portion of their sidewalk space to accept takeout orders and sell pre-packaged food items as part of the city's ongoing Open Storefronts program.

The Open Storefronts extension comes as a growing number of restaurants and bars repurpose their indoor dining rooms as markets, grocery stores, and wine shops to keep their doors open through the winter. Those goods can now be sold from the sidewalk space in front of businesses, so long as they maintain an eight-foot path from the curb and do not use the sidewalk space of adjacent businesses.
