Mercari Acquires Rival Marketplace App Origami | PYMNTS.com

Mercari , the flea market app in Japan with nearly 15 million users, announced Thursday it is purchasing Origami , a payments platform also in Japan. The purchase amount is undisclosed, according to DealStreetAsia .

Mercari plans to merge Origami Pay with their own Merpay service to battle competition from Softbank's rival app PayPay.

With plans to compete in U.S. markets against larger companies with similar business models like Craigslist and eBay, Mercari intends to improve current money losses with the expansion.

When I speak to people who are looking for a new customer relationship management system I always encourage them to focus more on the company, not just the product. Of course, the actual software is important. But thanks to the cloud, today's mainstream software companies are watching each other closely and matching feature to feature with quick updates that can be timely released.  Features are important.

What happens when a robot can lay bricks? - Marketplace

The following is an excerpt from Jonathan Waldman’s new book, “ SAM: One Robot, a Dozen Engineers, and the Race to Revolutionize the Way We Build ” about one man’s attempt to do the nearly impossible.

Scott, thirty-five years old and over six feet tall when upright, was wearing jeans and leather boots and a mud-smudged green jacket and, to insulate himself from the cold of western New York, a warm blue beanie beneath his white hard hat. Beneath the beanie was the same close-cropped swimmer's haircut he'd had since childhood, and beneath the haircut and a scruffy beard was a boyish, toothy, open face. As the first brick went down, he was too focused — and too exhausted — to smile.

Satchel's Pizza donates $12,000 to Grace Marketplace

On Tuesday, Satchel's Pizza announced that it will award $12,000 to Grace Marketplace, a homeless shelter joint-funded by the City of Gainesville and Alachua County Commissions. Grace has provided assistance and emergency shelter to the homeless in Alachua County since 2014.

Dignity Village, the homeless encampment surrounding Grace, remains open despite the city's plans to close it by Jan. 1. Many of its residents turn to Grace for services.

Los Angeles-based CREXi raises $29 million for its online real estate marketplace –

Los Angeles is one of the most desirable locations for commercial real estate in the United States, so it’s little wonder that there’s something of a boom in investments in technology companies servicing the market coming from the region.

It’s one of the reasons that CREXi , the commercial real estate marketplace, was able to establish a strong presence for its digital marketplace and toolkit for buyers, sellers and investors.

Since the company raised its last institutional round in 2018, it has added more than 300,000 properties for sale or lease across the U.S. and increased its user base to 6 million customers, according to a statement.

Wyclef Jean raised $25 million to democratize global music marketplace

Jean, who hit that half-century milestone back in October, decided that he would shift his creative and business knowledge of music toward teaching younger musicians how to own and control their content no matter where it gets distributed, and that’s how his newest venture was born.

Today, Jean announces that Carnival World Music Group, his newly launched music publishing and distribution company, has raised $25 million in funding, which will be used to sign songwriters and producers in parts of Africa, the Caribbean, and other underserved markets with the goal of empowering creative artists by giving them the publishing and distribution resources they need to promote their music and earn royalties.

Goldman Sachs pushes for more diverse boards of directors - Marketplace

The CEO of Goldman Sachs, David Solomon, told CNBC Thursday that starting this year, his investment bank would refuse to help companies go public "unless there's at least one diverse board candidate, with a focus on women." He noted the nearly 60 companies in the U.S. and Europe that have gone public in recent years with all-male boards and said companies with at least one woman director perform “significantly better.”

A company's board of directors oversees big strategy decisions, so having a diversity of perspectives in the room matters, said Erin Essenmacher, chief programming officer with the National Association of Corporate Directors.
