Aerial fitness studio hopes to revive dormant Naperville storefront

A franchise of AIR Aerial Fitness hopes it can last in a downtown Naperville storefront that's seen its share of businesses come and go -- if only it is granted permission to open.

Fitness studios and other businesses classified as service uses instead of retail establishments or restaurants aren't typically allowed to open on the first floor in the downtown Naperville zoning district.

But planning and zoning commission members on Wednesday gave unanimous preliminary approval to AIR's request to open at 236 S. Washington St., Suite 107 -- at least in part because of the past retail failures that have left the space vacant. The city council could decide at a later meeting to make the approval official and allow AIR to begin building out the space.

Harmon's Histories: Downtown storefront preserves tales of Missoula's

The face of downtown Missoula continues to change. These days, there's a new logo on a very, very old building. The image of a brawny gorilla marks the entrance to a martial arts studio at 218 W. Main St. For years the little building, sandwiched between The Shack restaurant and the Studebaker building, housed Art & Ray's Lock & Safe (now relocated).

But the history of that building goes back much further. Had you entered the shop in the 1890s, you would have met a strapping Canadian farrier described as "a magician with a hammer and a hot piece of iron."

Over 15 storefronts tagged with graffiti across Flagstaff | News | azdailysun.com

The Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center on North Switzer Canyon Drive had graffiti painted onto its sign photographed photographed on Thursday.

The sign for the shopping center along East Route 66 had graffiti painted on an empty store listing photographed on Thursday.

The Toasted Owl, located at 12 S. Mikes Pike St., had graffiti tagged onto its front fence photographed on Thursday.

This Sunday, the unidentified tagger hit many buildings south of the tracks in the southside neighborhood and storefronts on Switzer Canyon Drive. Business owners couldn't come to a unanimous conclusion about what they think the tag says — "Beak," "Book," maybe "Beck" — but they are united in their annoyance. Charles Hernandez, spokesman for the Flagstaff police, said officers believe the cases are connected and committed by the same person, who was caught on video wearing a mask.
