All signs point to the planned redevelopment of the Fillmore Gardens Shopping Center, on Columbia Pike just east of Walter Reed Drive and west of Penrose Square, starting soon.
The plan is to replace the aging, single-story commercial buildings — housing CVS, H&R Block, Atilla’s restaurant, the Salsa Room, and the Burritos Bros food stand — with a six-story apartment building featuring ground-floor retail. Work could start as soon as 2021, though merchants are also being told it could be 2-3 years from now.

(CNN) - A new report found that making purchases online and having them delivered is not good for the environment.
The main reason is the way people shop. They purchase frequently, but many people only buy a few items at a time.
This produces more packaging waste, and online items tend to come from multiple distribution centers.
For the year-and-a-half long study, researchers compared carbon footprints for products purchased at physical stores, products purchased by ordering online but going to the store for pickup, and strictly online orders that were shipped.

To be clear, they are designer clothes. When I visited, I spotted a white T-shirt that cost $91, a pair of pink satin Manolo Blahnik heels for $618, and even baby clothes, like a pink and gold Versace romper for $154.
That's where I met Juliette Laura, who's 25, and had on a T-shirt that says "Pick Your Own Wildflowers." She bought almost everything she's wearing secondhand.
Houston firms buy Hammond Aire Plaza shopping center on Airline
A pair of Houston firms have bought the Hammond Aire Plaza on Airline and Old Hammond highways , according to sales documents.
Doing business as Hammond Aire LLC, CRS Realty along with Mont Belvieu Properties V LLC bought the property. The two firms purchased the property from Viking Investments G&I VIII Hammond LLC. As reported by Daily Report , Viking Investments bought the shopping center in late 2015 as part of a nearly $60 million deal that also included a Lake Charles shopping center.

Shopping in the bulk section can be a powerful way to minimize packaging waste. Containers and packaging account for 23% of landfilled waste and for most of the litter that pollutes our beaches and waterways.
Bulk food is often fresher than packaged food, too. At Ballard Market, bulk food manager Carrie Cumbow said people who buy jarred spices are "throwing their money away." Not only are jarred spiced more expensive, but they contain fillers, and they're not as fresh, so you have to use more of them.
