Virginia bills would let utility customers shop around for renewable energy | Energy News Network

If state legislators act on the next iteration of either of two bills, Virginians would be allowed to buy 100% renewable energy from competitive service suppliers — no matter what programs their utilities offer.

The catch is that lawmakers have less than three weeks to act before the General Assembly session ends in early March.

Unlike their neighbors in Washington, D.C., and Maryland, Virginians can now only buy clean energy from a competitor if their utility doesn't offer its own 100% green energy plan. Legislation being floated would let residential, commercial and industrial customers shop for renewables whether or not their utility makes available what are referred to as green tariffs.

One of the latest involves a caller claiming a rebate is available. In some cases, the caller ID will indicate that the message is from Delmarva Power.

Spokesman Jake Sneeden says the utility sees an increase in phone scams during the winter months and never offers rebates over the phone.

Delmarva also participates in Utilities United Against Scams Day in November and through social media and other channels.

The Genius Behind Ikea's Program That Gave Credit to Customers for Their Time Spent Driving

Ikea stores are a unique shopping experience. For most people, it's more of a shopping event, and it's easy to spend hours roaming through its maze of showrooms. There's also the fact that those stores are usually located far on the outskirts of cities, meaning it's often a trip just to get there.

It seems that  Ikea  recognizes that challenge, and came up with a creative solution for customers of its newest store in Dubai. Using  Google Maps , the company launched a program that allowed shoppers at its Jebel Ali store (which opened in December) to earn credit for the time they spent driving to the store. A spokesperson for the company has confirmed to me that the promotion has since expired, but there's a lesson here worth a closer look.
