Grocery shopping is a necessity, but winding through aisles with a loaded cart and dodging other shoppers within a six-foot radius can feel like a dystopic version of Super Mario . It's easy to go through an entire bottle of hand sanitizer in one trip, re-upping every time you touch a canned good, the handle of the freezer case, or the credit-card machine.
But grocery shopping, for most, can also offer a welcome opportunity to leave the apartment. And — as we've learned by watching dozens of friends try their hand at baking bread — cooking is an excellent way to pass the time and quiet at least a fraction of our anxieties.
Quite a lot has been going on:
Is it ethical to shop COVID-19 sales? - Marketplace
“It just doesn’t seem appropriate,” she said. She feels silly buying stuff she doesn't need, and she doesn't want to put warehouse and delivery workers at risk.
But she did break down once and bought lipstick from Sephora — it was half off, with free shipping. “Is that a, you know, practical purchase?” she said. “No!”
Retailers are trying to keep customers shopping, and consumer spending is important for the economy. But for some, buying discretionary items — anything that's not food and supplies — feels kind of weird and maybe even a little wrong.
Wuhan stores, shopping malls reopen after weeks battling coronavirus
WUHAN, China – Shopkeepers in Wuhan, the city at the center of the coronavirus outbreak, were reopening Monday, but customers were scarce after authorities lifted more of the anti-virus controls that kept tens of millions of people at home for two months.
"I'm so excited, I want to cry," said a woman on one of Wuhan's major shopping streets, the Chuhe Hanjie pedestrian mall, who would give only the English name Kat.
OpenTable will allow people to reserve shopping times at supermarkets - The Verge
OpenTable wants to let you reserve shopping times at supermarkets to help decrease overcrowding and make stores safer for shoppers.

Currently, seven partners across Los Angeles and San Francisco — six restaurants turn pop-up markets plus one local grocery store are using the new feature, but OpenTable told The Verge it is in "active talks with other national grocers/retailers."
