The company said Thursday that sales at its stores open for at least one year, a key metric, increased 9.1% during its previous quarter compared with the same period last year.
Sales at Costco in February were up 12.4% from a year ago. The company attributed around 3% of that to "an uptick in consumer demand" from concerns over coronavirus.
"Members are turning to us for a variety of items associated with preparing for and dealing with a virus," Costco CFO Richard Galanti told analysts on a call. These items include dry grocery items, cleaning supplies, Clorox and bleach, water, paper goods, hand sanitizers, sanitizing wipes, disinfectants, health and beauty aids.

Galleria shopping center in Riverside evacuated after ‘glitch’ triggers false reports
The Galleria at Tyler shopping center in Riverside was evacuated Saturday evening after a recording over a loudspeaker in the mall told shoppers to “shelter in place and evacuate.”
Riverside Police Officer Ryan J. Railsback described it as a “glitch” that led to false reports of gunfire. Officers were clearing the mall around 5:15 p.m. as authorities investigated.
This in turn caused panic and fear that a shooting was taking place. NO SHOTS FIRED OR HEARD, and this was a false activation of the Galleria's warning system.
Officers have determined the mall is safe and normal activities are resuming. https://t.co/1WaBQIFsjH

NEW YORK — The growing fear over a new virus has transformed busy streets and shopping centers into ghost towns in parts of China, Japan and Italy.
Shopping centers may have to take more extreme precautions, such as temporary closures, said Coye Nokes, a partner at OC&C Strategy Consultants’ consumer and retail practice.
“While the brands and retailers can attempt to mitigate the impact via other channels like e-commerce, malls themselves will struggle with traffic under any extended virus scenario,” she said.
