As government measures to decelerate the spread of the coronavirus have come into place, many upscale retailers in New York such as Chanel, Celine and Fendi have blocked access to their shops with plywood. Luxury retailers, for their part, have been in lockdown mode in recent weeks in different countries globally, while luxury shops started to accept customers again in Shanghai, The New York Times reported.
Stateside, however, boarded up retail locations have showed up on Los Angeles' Rodeo Drive, Washington's 14th Street, Chicago's Magnificent Mile and San Francisco's Union Square. Users of social media are now putting pictures online of retail hotspots that were once busy quiet and possibly getting ready for civil unrest.

"Maybe I've watched too many apocalypse movies," said Julia Momose, mixologist, partner and creative director at Bar Kumiko and Kikko. "But everyone's happy in the beginning, and after something happens, immediately there's looting."
Last Sunday, Momose posted a timelapse video to her Instagram account of her emptying Bar Kumiko's shelves and wrote about the sadness of packing up the space: "In the moment, taking and storing away all of the bottles feels like such a permanent thing."

Warehouse workers at one of Magic: The Gathering's largest secondhand stores say they are trying to unionize, a major step for the collectible card game's workforce.
The more than 100 workers at TCGPlayer's warehouse, which sells Magic: the Gathering , Pokémon , and Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, among other collectibles, say they have concerns about their working conditions and healthcare.
"We were promised a company that truly cared about its workers, offering great benefits and a supportive, nurturing community," the union's organizing committee said in a letter it released online . "As the company has grown and evolved, workers in the Fulfillment Center have experienced much of this promise erode."
