SOUTHINGTON — Just over a year after a fire destroyed the store, Tops Marketplace is back and open for business today.
"It's been crazy busy," said owner John Salerno around 11:30 a.m. "Just incredible. We can't stop virtually hugging this morning."
The family-owned grocery store, 887 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, has spent the last year in rebuild mode after a March 3 fire destroyed the building. Salerno said they had planned to reopen Monday, but felt like they were ready to do it a little earlier.

Tara Isabella Burton: Marketplace is where much of America worships anymore | Columnists |
Enter Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, R-Texas, who turns 70 next month and who told Fox News's Tucker Carlson last week that, if called on "to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for its children and grandchildren," he — and other seniors, the demographic most vulnerable to the coronavirus — would be "all in."

Patrick isn't alone in making the case that the economy demands, if not quite ritual sacrifice, at least the willingness of a nation to put its most vulnerable at risk. Last weekend, President Donald Trump hinted that, despite experts' pleas for Americans to embrace social distancing, he would advocate for the nation to return to work within a few weeks: "WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF," he tweet-wailed late Sunday.

"Servicers are already hearing from a number of people who are worried about their ability to make payments going forward," said Mike Fratantoni, chief economist at the Mortgage Bankers Association.
Mortgage servicers are the companies that collect those payments. The good news: If your mortgage is backed by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac or the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), you may be able to suspend or lower your payments for up to 12 months, if you've lost income due to the pandemic. Other lenders may offer similar relief.

Fed takes unprecedented steps to prop up the economy - Marketplace
The Federal Reserve announced new measures Monday aimed at preventing a full-on economic depression. The central bank will now buy unlimited amounts of Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities.
The Fed is also setting up special programs to support business and consumer lending. The overall goal is to keep money flowing in the U.S. economy.
Traditionally, the Fed responds to crises by injecting money into the banking system. But this is a different kind of crisis, according to Jeffrey Bergstrand, finance professor at Notre Dame.
