Trump Campaign Threatens TV Stations Over Coronavirus Ad

In late March 2020, U.S. President Donald Trump's reelection campaign threatened to sue television stations for defamation and warned that their broadcasting licenses could be revoked if they continued to air a campaign advertisement created by Priorities USA Action, a Democratic super PAC.

The ad showed a steep graph of growing coronavirus cases in the U.S., accompanied by audio of public statements made by Trump about the COVID-19 pandemic:

In the March 25 cease-and-desist letter sent to TV stations, Trump campaign attorney Alex Cannon wrote that the ad takes a remark made by Trump during a Feb. 28 Charleston, South Carolina, campaign rally out of context.

The Trump reelection campaign shared an ad with prominent Democrats and media personalities praising the president's handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

The video then parses moments of praise from members of the administration, including White House coronavirus task force official Anthony Fauci and Defense Secretary Mark Esper, as well as Democratic governors and media pundits.

"He said everything that I could've hoped for," California Gov. Gavin Newsom says in the video. "I can tell you the actions he has taken. His team has been on it," says New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

And most ad agency executives agree that trying to advertise during unprecedented times is a difficult balance. "There's a very fine line between being helpful and flogging stuff on the back of a crisis," Ian Henderson, chief executive of ad agency AML Group, told CNBC by phone.

"It's a bit like walking down the street at the moment. People are being courteous and walking around each other and giving each other space and not making other people anxious," he said, referring to the social distancing measures governments have put in place – and that's how brands should be with their customers. "We would certainly look at any creative work or strategy through the filter of 'Is this appropriate? Is this going to upset people?'" Henderson said.

It's the second time in a week that Twitter has shut down requests from the Trump campaign to sanction Democratic attack ads that the president's allies say were deceptively edited.

Twitter recently slapped a manipulated media tag on a pro-Trump ad, leading to allegations from the president's campaign that the company is only enforcing its standards in favor of Democrats.

The first tweet from the DNC states: "Yesterday, Trump said he didn't disband the government's pandemic response team. He lied. Here he is earlier this year defending doing just that."

On the surface of things, it appears that President Trump does not want you to see the ad above, which simply quotes his recent history of public statements downplaying the coronavirus crisis and maintaining that his administration had everything totally under control.

The second possibility is that, for reasons we may never understand, Trump is secretly working for Priorities USA. Yes, that sounds completely implausible—but then again, Trump did put in a lot of time and effort over the past couple of months effectively creating the ad in the first place. He said everything in the ad in front of TV cameras—he put it all out there—and all the Priorities USA team needed to do was string the Trump soundbites together and add in some graphics.

Over the weekend, The Martin Agency launched a campaign for client DoorDash promoting the food-delivery company as playing an integral role in connecting customers with restaurants whose dining rooms have closed.
