Why storefronts are boarded up during COVID-19 | Retail Dive

As the pandemic drags on, many companies have opted to cover up their stores. But is it the best decision long-term for a retailer's brand?

It's a part of the city that is typically bustling with shoppers, bar hoppers and locals running errands. But, like shopping areas across the country, almost all activity has temporarily halted due to COVID-19.

What was once raucous on a Saturday night is now silent. Adding to an eerie feeling of disconnect is a row of stores that are boarded up. West Elm's entire first floor has been covered with plywood. Sephora has been boarded up as well — the wood has been painted black, and notes have been left behind stating that the store is temporarily closed but the company is offering free online shipping with a code.

Crooks ram SUV through front of L.I. smoke shop, steal vapes - New York Daily News

A trio of desperate crooks rammed their SUV through the storefront of a Long Island smoke shop early Wednesday to steal cigarettes and vape pens, cops said.

The plot unraveled shortly after midnight when Suffolk County police pulled over a 2003 Chevy Tahoe on Deer Park Ave. in Deer Park for a busted headlight about 12:35, authorities said.

When 1st Precinct Sergeant Robert Desanto approached the vehicle, police said, he noticed broken glass on the back bumper of the SUV, as well as several cartons of cigarettes and boxes of vape pens inside.

Archer The Storefront making coffee essential to staying open

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The coronavirus has impacted many local small businesses, but one local shop has taken a small part of its business and made it an essential part of staying open.

Kelly Archer is the owner of Archer The Storefront, a local interior decorating and design store. She said right now, all operations as far as designing have stopped because she can't go into people's homes. So instead, her focus is on social media and coffee.

"We're not essential but coffee is a consumable and people want it," Kelly said. "So we have gone to the internet and started with Instagram and Facebook and I kind of showcase some accessories and little things and we have no-touch curbside pick up."
