Pop-up markets canceled by COVID-19 shift shopping experience online | Business News | madison.com

At last year's Madison Night Market, Ana Kosaian, a UW-Madison student from Michigan, takes photos of some fellow students. After canceling its May 14 event in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers decided they will try to replicate the event virtually.

While shoppers won't be able to congregate Downtown for the Madison Night Market, the organizers will hold an online event to help drum up business for the vendors and retailers that would have benefited from the foot traffic.

Ariel Smith, 23, has a connective tissue syndrome that makes it difficult for her to work, and the idea of visiting a store makes her nervous.

She receives about $195 in SNAP benefits each month, but her state does not offer a way to use that money online. Most don't, although Texas and several other states have recently signed up for a pilot program that would expand that access.
