The coronavirus pandemic is dealing a costly blow to the retail industry, as only supermarkets and other businesses deemed essential are open -- and social distancing is changing the way we shop.

At least two owners of Long Island shopping centers plan to help customers and retailers adapt to the change in shopping habits by designating centralized curbside pickup areas at their retail properties.  And some grocers and other retailers have launched their own curbside pickup services recently.

What Rochester boutiques are open for online shopping and delivery

Instead of letting the coronavirus shutdown get to her, boutique owner Tanvi Asher developed a business plan to keep her shops afloat.

From social media shopping to virtual assistants, Rochester-area boutique owners are thinking outside the box in these difficult times. The spring 2020 lines arrived at boutiques just as the shutdown began in mid-March.

Raquel Denise Lowry, who shares physical boutique space with Jonzey's Closet at 978 S. Clinton Ave. in the Swillburg neighborhood, continually updates her inventory of purses on her Facebook page Raquel Denise Handbags and is offering coupons and specials during the shutdown. She has been offering truly touchless pickup. When a customer buys a purse from her, she will arrange a time for the pickup and, wearing a mask, she holds the purse on a long hook to deliver to customers in their cars.

Pa. lawmaker defends shopping without a mask, urges public to question state officials | ABC27

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Shopping without a mask during the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t recommended by health experts, but that’s exactly what a midstate lawmaker said he did recently in a Facebook post.

State Representative Russ Diamond (R-Lebanon) calls the resulting backlash from that post an organized effort by leftist groups targeting republicans.

“I went shopping, I didn’t wear a mask, I found toilet paper,” Diamond said in a Zoom interview Wednesday.

How to commute, go shopping, and go on vacation as states reopen for business during the

A coronavirus vaccine remains far off, but the stay-at-home orders in many states are starting to lift, if they haven't already.

They'll be finding a world that's vastly different from the last time they visited a doctor's office, travelled, grabbed a cup of coffee or sat at their office desk.

For example, under state laws, Georgia hairdressers need to take a customer's temperature . Colorado's rules will let employers fill their offices with only 50% of their workforce and retail stores in Florida can only fill up to a quarter of capacity.

Costco sales drop as panic shopping during the pandemic wears off - Business Insider

The warehouse chain experienced a surge in sales throughout February and March as customers flocked to its stores to stock up on essentials in order to prepare for the lockdown.

These new restrictions, along with the ongoing lockdown in parts of the US, are now starting to weigh on its business.

"Stay-at-home orders, social distancing restrictions, and some mandatory closures led to decreased traffic and sales in our warehouses," it said.
