Taiwan is "disturbingly normal," but not immune to pandemic - Marketplace

But that doesn’t mean the economy is completely up and running. Chen, a filmmaker, hasn’t been able to shoot since the start of the crisis.

“I was supposed to shoot a movie here in April, and that’s not happening anytime soon,” Chen said in an interview with “Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal.

“I also do some work in LA as a writer,” he said. “In a weird way, it hasn’t stopped. And it’s probably even picked up a little bit more because all you can do right now is development, right?”

Etsy is doing very well during the pandemic - Marketplace

Etsy reported earnings this week and it said it sold more than 12 million masks last month, totaling $133 million. And people are buying other things there that they can’t get elsewhere, like garden plants and seeds, sewing materials and kitchen supplies. The question is, can Etsy keep all those customers once the pandemic ends?

Josh Silverman: At the beginning of April, the CDC changed its guidelines and recommended that Americans wear fabric face masks. All of a sudden, we saw an explosion of demand, literally overnight, on Etsy. We put out a call to our sellers, saying, “Hey, if you have a sewing machine, please start making masks.” Within two weeks, we had 20,000 sellers making masks, and in fact, now we have 60,000 sellers who’ve made and sold masks.

How many jobs will come back after the COVID-19 pandemic ends? - Marketplace

Many workers believe that, too — at least the part about getting their jobs back at some point. Of those who lost jobs last month, 78% reported they were temporarily laid off.

But a paper out this week from the Becker Friedman Institute at the University of Chicago estimates that many of the layoffs people expect to be temporary will actually become permanent.

"Our best guess is something like 60% of the employment reduction is going to be temporary, and 40% is going to be permanent," said Nicholas Bloom, an economics professor at Stanford University and one of the co-authors of the paper. "Looking through history at previous recessions, often these temporary layoffs unfortunately turn out to be permanent."

From prison to pandemic - This Is Uncomfortable from Marketplace

“Coughing, faces looking flushed… and you can’t even get the test, for the most part,” he said. “You have a roommate that stays right there with you, so you couldn’t avoid it.”

To protect his family, just in case he was infected with coronavirus and asymptomatic, Harrington chose to spend two weeks self-quarantining in a hotel. He’s been enjoying the little things: long showers and getting food delivered.
